I just bought a 511 at the gun show today here in Austin for 250.00. I have just about every S&W model 22lr revolver and this caught my eye since it was the spitting image of my 63 except it had a bit heavier bbl...same pinned bbl...how can I find out the manufacture date. What is your opinion on it? It appears to be exactly the same from grips to the plate cover and screws to the red ramp sight. The only differences are the bit heavier bbl and the adjustable sights are completely stainless and my 63 has a blackened stainless set up. HELP ANY INFO ON THIS GUN WOULD BE GREAT.

I had bought one new. I took it to my Gunsmith to smooth out the trigger. He is awesome on S&W triggers. He pointed out the play in the crane. With the cylinder open, one could easily move it forward and back. All screws were tight. He could have easily taken my money for an action job, but stated that if it was his, he wouldn't bother. I sent it back to Rossi. The sent it back stating it was repaired, but it was obvious they didn't do a thing. I sold it without having fired it. I wanted to like it, but couldn't.

I have one, bought it used at a gun show a dozen years ago to replace one I'd bought new that got stolen. Fantastically accurate little revolver with Federal Automatch which it seems to prefer. It'll shoot 2" groups at 25 off the bench with many loads, but that Automatch goes into 1" off the bench. THAT is as good as I get with irons off bags.

The gun isn[t perfect. It's got some end shake which seems designed in that sorta bugs me, but doesn't seem to affect function. The DA pull, like most any small frame DA rimfire, is stiff. But, with that sort of accuracy, I won't sell it. I don't sell accurate guns. Besides, it's my only rimfire revolver. Good little gun. I gave 200 for mine used. I gave 200 for the first one I bought new at Walmart back when Walmart sold handguns. So, I don't think 250 now days is a real bad deal for a revolver of this quality. It's hand over fist a better built gun than all those H&R top breaks that were so popular for so long, IMHO. Is it a Smith M63? Well, no, but it's just as accurate, at least mine is. :D As far as the DA trigger goes, I can shoot it DA, but kit guns are supposed to be fired SA. It's not a defense gun, it's a woods gun for small game or whatever I come across, snakes on the tank, turtles on the tank, beer cans on the tank, whatever. :D

Hello Kernel,,,

In the picture below one is a Rossi 511 and one is a S&W 63. Which is which?

The one on the right is the S&W,,,
I know because those are my revolvers. :)

I bought that Rossi for $75.00,,,
One of the spokes on the ejector star was stripped,,,
That made it into an inexpensive but very accurate 5-shooter.

I finally found a smith who could fix it for me,,,
He charged me $125.00 to replace the entire cylinder including return shipping.

So with my cost to ship it to him,,,
My Rossi 511 had a total cost of about $240-250.

Here is who to contact should yours ever need repair:
