I hadn't really expected to, but I traded into a Rossi 92 in .45 Colt - it's the 16" carbine version.

I like the little carbine, and it seems like a potentially great truck/bumming gun, but I have a question for those of you with more Rossi experience than I have.

I load heavy .45 Colt loads for my Bisley Blackhawk. I stick to the Hornady loads in the "Ruger/TC only" section of the handbook.

Those loads crowd the .44 Mag loads in speed and pressure.

Will the little Rossi handle the same loads, or will they give it heartburn?

My first thought is that it will be fine, since Rossi also chambers the 92 in .44 mag, but was hoping for some firsthand experience.

Thanks in advance,
KR

Not sure about the answer to your handloading question but the man I would ask about anything concerning Puma 92's would be Steve Young (a.k.a. Nate Kiowa Jones-SASS). You can email him at [email protected]. He answered several questions I had about my Puma 92 carbine, and also offers parts and service on them. Hope this helps.

They are certainly safe for "Ruger only" loads and more. The 1892 is the strongest of the pistol cartridge leverguns, capable of withstanding loads that would grenade a Ruger Blackhawk.

Thanks for all of the input!

One of my favorite things about THR is all of the good advice. I took Bannockburns' suggestion and emailed Steve Burns. Here's his response which agrees nicely with your advice.

Thanks again!

You will be just fine. The 44mag top end loads see about 40 to 45,000 psi. For the other pistol cal leverguns that’s the top end limit. But, did you know Rossi also chambers their 92’s in 454 Casull. The Casull ammo can see upwards of 60,000. The Rossi 92 actions are doing fine at those levels. Not even Marlins 336/95 action will handle those pressures.
The bottom line is you will blow a Ruger/TC up before you damage the Rossi.

BTW, take a look at my Web Store. You may find something you need for it.

Rossi also makes a .454 M92. I think your .45 handloads should be fine in a in that little .45 rifle.
Well, the use to ... but don't any more. Pity

I mainly shoot mine in 45 Colt, and got it over the 45 Colt model for two reasons:
1) no worries about "hot" 45 Colt loads (I've got some that push 250 JHP at over 2000fps)
2) "tube" loading in addition to the "gate". my thumbs thank me each time I go to the range :)
3) standard recoil pad (really appreciated on #1 above)

my '92 is in 480 ruger. great little rifle, but not terribly accurate. i shoot better groups from my taurus raging bull in 480 ruger with same loads

enjoy it!

And you stand a snowflake's chance in hell of finding one :)

You'll maybe find an old Puma version or two on the auction websites, but they tend to occupy upper price brackets. Likewise, Rossi isn't carrying them in their 2011 catalog. Best of luck if that's something you'll be pursuing. A stainless steel will be impossible to find, regardless :cuss:
