Rossi 971/2 broken cylinder latch thumb piece

I think that's what the problem is anyway, it seems to not want to open without a lot of force. Anybody have any experience with this sort of thing?

I think that perhaps the pin isn't pushing the ejector rod out quite far enough to clear the frame. Is this an expensive repair job?

Until you or we can figure out what's wrong, it is hard to say.

A couple of ideas. Check the extractor rod to see if it may have unscrewed and be binding at the front end. This was a common problem with S&W's until they went to left-hand threads, something Rossi did not do. That fix is simple; remove the rod, put a drop of red Loctite on the threads and screw it back in, using a vise or pliers with padded jaws.

If that is not the problem, then something may be broken or worn inside the gun and that is a harder problem to diagnose. A bit more info may help, like when you do get it open, is the little plunger that is operated by the thumb latch even with the breechface or not?

That right there is what I thought was causing the problem. It looks like it's even to me, but I thought it must be not quite pushing the plunger quite all the way out. I am going to check out your suggestion and see if that was causing the problem, thanks.

Oh my!

Somebody (who's initials are J.K.) just saved me a trip to the gunsmith or the time and expense of shipping the gun back to Rossi. Not to mention the embarrasment of being told that there was nothing wrong with my gun, I just needed to turn the extractor rod in a little tighter. If you're ever in the north or east texas area Jim you need to swing by here for a beer or a cup of coffee
