For those with kids who desire to do military service check out your local college that offers ROTC. OU ROTC gives out about 12 scholarships a year that range from 2-3 years plus they give about $400 a month for spending money. It really turns out to a 4 year scholarship because the college throws in the first year free! My son is a sophmore this year in the ROTC program and thus far hasn't had to spend a dime of his (or my) money for books, food, or housing. He was allowed to major in a field of his choice and will only have to commit to 5 years service in payment (His choice of branch, active or reserve). Its such a great deal I now have my 14 year old daughter enrolled in JROTC (high school version). She loves the program too and has already made sergeant in 4 months! If you strongely believe as I do that most young adults will benefit from military service, You should starting checking out ROTC while your kids (or yourself) are still early in high school. You have to compete against other applicants so start early and demonstrate your commitment. :)

I went to college on a 4 year ROTC scholarship. Great program. I was in college during the Vietnam War so the on campus dynamics were a little different than now. My only advice is to do a full court press on influence points. Personally lobby anyone and any groups involved in the process. If colleges are kicking in bennies work them also.

Yes, My son just graduated under the ROTC program.

He is headed to Ft Sam Houston for OBC, then to Korea.

He matured a lot under their leadership.

I had a hell of a deal with Air Force ROTC. They were going to cash in like $9,000 for me to go to Illonios Institute of Technology, plus like $250 a month stipend. That would be for each year for four years plus the grand total to go to school was like $23,000. Then the IIT was going to kick in the rest of tuition, room and board, and then their own little stipend around $100 or $200. Why didn't I take it? DODMERB!!! For those not in the know, Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board. They didn't like something about my eyes!!! Man was I depressed to earn all of that and then not be able to use it. God had other plans though and I enjoyed UCLA and staying out here on the Left Coast.
