I just picked up one of those Heritage Rough Rider 22lr on sale at Cabelas. I didn't expect much from a fixed sight $150.00 revolver but the reviews were mostly positive. Turns out the reports were right. This is a fun gun. With elbows braced, I was able to keep under 2" groups at 25 yards with no problem once I got used to the sights. (Note to self: paint the front sight white for better visibility.) I'm a decent revolver shooter but not more than that, so the gun is capable of some serious accuracy.

This is the 22lr only version, not with the 22 mag cylinder, with 6.5" barrel. The trigger is not light but broke cleanly. For the price I don't expect the finish of a Smith or Colt but this one was adequate and I didn't get it to keep it pristine. The metal fit was fine and the grips were even. Lock up when cocked was tight. One thing I especially liked was that each click when rotating the cylinder lined up with the loading gate which made loading and unloading a lot faster and easier. I am seriously impressed. This may be the best inexpensive plinker out there. It would be a good affordable first handgun for anyone and a great teaching tool to introduce newcomers to handguns. If I needed another 22 SA revolver I would buy one of these again. (I know, what's 'need' got to do with anything.) ;)

The gun showed a BIG preference for standard velocity ammo, in this case the inexpensive Aguila 40 grain standard velocity lead bullet stuff. This ammo made such an improvement I tried it in a Single-Six and the usual groups tightened up a lot. Don't know if I got lucky or if 22lr revolvers usually prefer standard velocity ammo but now I have to try the Aguila in the K-22 and Contender to see if it makes a difference.

My wife used a rough rider for the revolver portion of her ccw qualification and shot it quite well despite very little handgun experience at the time. Definitely a great gun for new shooters and a ton of fun to burn through a brick. I've also got one of their leather holster and belt combos. Not a bad rig for $60.
