If this was just for home defense. Or for no specific purpose, i would have no question in choice. I love tue look of the square but smith and wesson revolvers. Howver i am looking to get a model 10 for ccw and im only giving the round butt a look at all because im thinking it my conceal a little better.

What say you?

I read somewere that you can get after market gripp for the round but that make it appear square. But thats just more cash and i like the look of the stock s&w grips. Logo and all. And it seems that actual square butt grips wouldnt fit because of the inside being shaped for the different metal cut.

Also, please dont post about other guns you think are better. I have owned quite a few semi autos including, but not limited to glock, Xd, colt xs, and lcp and i have ahd a ftf or fte at least once with all of them (although tue glock and xd are tied with only one in 1000-ish rounds) however in all the revolvers i have owned and shot they have gone bang 100% of the time. I prefer s&w. Im happy with 38 special, i dont feel the need for 357 mag. And while overall i may would choose a snub over a 4" barrel, im looking at a $100+ different in the model 10 police trade in vs the j frame snubby. And i like the added accuracy i
ae with the longer barrel when shooting past 7-10 yards.

Sorry for the typos. Im typing on my phone and when i tey move the cursor to fix my errors the screen goes haywire.

A round-butt gun with a true round butt stocks theoretically conceals a little better, but a lot has to do with how you carry, and what the stocks themselves (or the grip if you go one-piece) really are shaped like.

The more hand-filling they are, the less easily they conceal.

How much that matters depends a lot on your dress and body. I've "concealed" a 4" 629 with the big Hogue rubber grip (sort of a square grip +P :)) under a t-shirt, but something really minimal like a Ahrends "Boot" Grip is a lot less bulk under your garment. 'Course, a lot less comfortable and secure in the hand, too.

You really have to try stuff until you find the least grip you can shoot well, and then work your wardrobe around that.

RB

Since all you ask is opinions, mine is the round butt and that is THE design and models I buy.

I have smallish hands and the RB's fit me better and I feel like they conceal better as THE part that sticks out of the back of the shirt is the bottom rear of the butt.

least that my not so humble opinion.

i like the feel of the square butt grips in my hand, they just feel right for me. wether they conceal as well as round butt grips would depend on where you are concealing them. in a pocket, not as well. iwb, owb, shoulder holster, ankle holster i dont see a difference.
you could buy a 2" barrel from smith and wesson for the model 10 and change it. i did that.

gibson, it really boils down to which style you prefer, and this should not be based on looks alone. It should be based on how the revolver feels in your hand.

For 2" - 3" barreled revolvers I prefer the round butt configuration with "magnas" and a grip adapter. For 4" or longer barrels I like the square butt configuration, with or without a adapter.

Good luck with whatever you do, and keep us posted.

I go for the round butt because it fits my hand better than a square butt.

When carrying concealed, the round butt. Square butt edge could snag on clothing.

Round butt also has the advantage of using round-to-square configuration.

My preference is the round butt, regardless the barrel length. Just feels better in my hand, than square butt.

All butts are equal in my hands. But, I prefer the LOOK of a nice, round butt. Wait, we're talking about guns? Oh. I prefer the traditional square butt on my revolvers.

In a J frame my preference is with the round butt configuration. Factory stocks with a Tyler T-Grip adapter work really well for CCW. With a 2", 2 1/2", or 3" barrel in a K frame I still like the round butt models; with a 4" or longer barrel then the square butt feels more comfortable in my hands.

My old bony hands prefer the round butt K frame. And I've become partial to Hogue Bantam grips. The square butt can be easily converted to round butt if the serial number allows it.

I find my round butt conceals a short barrel easier than a longer barrel.

And while I don't have a square butt I used to have a flat one. Long barreled guns worked well with such a butt.

I prefer round butts, but it all depends on what YOU like to hold in your hand. Each work equally well.

I have a S&W Model 49, .38 Bodyguard. When I got it, it had a pair of Uncle Mike's rubber ergonomic grips on it, and I've always liked them. It came with the box, papers and original wood grips, so last night I put the original grips on it - mainly because of this thread.

Ew - I couldn't stand them! Little tiny things, with all that weight of the revolver. It was very awkward to try and hold that pistol, let alone try to aim it and dry-fire it even semi-accurately. Trying to quick-point it at anything, I was consistently pointing about 2-3 feet high. Yuck. Felt like a clown gun.

I put the rubber ones right back on, they're SO much better for me. Guess I really DO have big, fat hands.

I have both, and for me, the round butt carries better when I CC. But a lot depends on your personal carry manner, as to which feels more comfortable to you.

For concealed carry, I definitely prefer round butt. For shooting I definitely prefer square butt.

I don't know guys, personally I prefer a nice round butt in my hands ;)

Haha sorry had to say it.

Back on topic, either or really. Depends on what's comfortable for you and what you can conceal with your holster and your wardrobe.

I don't have a problem with either one for concealed carry, but I prefer a round butt for both carry and it's more comfortable shooting for me. But, that's with wood grips, can't stand those deformed condoms.
