Seems that Thabo Mbeki's government is threatening white farmers with land seizures in six months if they don't agree to sell their land for prices the government deems "reasonable" in order to hand it over to people with the correct skin color.

Full story at:

When they broached the subject of land seizures - errr, I mean land reform - they made a lot of noise about not emulating Robert Mugabe's disasterous polices in Zimbabwe . . . but this suggests that they're looking at making that very same mistake.

Zimbabwe of today may be RSA in 10 years . . . but considering the stubborn streak of the Boers, there may be more than one Martin Olds for RSA's government to deal with - it could get very messy.

Things don't look good . . . I'd like to hear from THR's RSA natives to see what their take is on the situation.

If they are stupid enough to want to make their economy like that of a nation where $50m zim dollars buys you a square of toilet paper and people have to buy groceries with BILLIONS of zim dollars they are too stupid to live. Let em do what they want, but there had better not be a single US taxpayer dollar wasted on food aid to those natural selection candidates.

I'll 2nd that.

They deserve exactly what they get, as does Zimbabwe.

I wonder how you say, "Who is John Galt?" in isiXhosa.

Let's get this straight. "Land seizures" do not happen to white people. "Land reform" does, and it's perfectly okay. :D

Food aid! Heh, I'd support it, if it would ever actually get to the hungry people! It always gets intercepted and stolen by their dictators!

Support those peasants in those countries--of every color and sect. They don't like those dictators any more than we do, trust me.

I'll verify that statement. When I was there I would have stacks of ragged bills with long strings of zeroes in them. It was hard to count what was what. SA is heading that way, which is sad because it did have such potential to not be like all the other African countries.

According to a friend with family in RSA, the RSA has instituted quotas on how much of you rmoney you can take out of RSA. Her 60 year old brother was able to get out only about $2000 of his wealth, by hook or crook.

Pile on top of that, his savings are worth about 1/10 what they were worth due to inflation and unfavorable exchange rates since the ANC took power.

Everybody who has their wealth invested in self (intelligence, experience, skills) will end up leaving RSA for greener pastures.

If you have money to take out of RSA, and there are currency restrictions, think diamonds. There will be a loss on resale, but as opposed to COMPLETE loss?

In Zimbabwe, they're having more money exchange troubles, and are attempting to "de-monetize" old bills . . . see the last two postings at http://africantears.netfirms.com/thisweek.shtml for recent updates.

I heard that RSA was trying to prevent some people from leaving RSA - doctors, paramedics, teachers, and such. True or not? Anyone have info on this?

this is

Where gun control schemes work like a charm. First, you disarm the population, then whatever the Government does is entirely up to them. Might makes right... Unfettered tyranny at it's finest.

"Lulu Xingwana, the new agriculture minister, said the government would no longer spend time negotiating with white farmers of whom she accused of not being committed to the empowerment of black people."

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I absolutely love it how the world viewed apartheid as racist and evil, and yet now that the shoe is on the other foot, it's perfectly acceptable because it is the evil whites being discriminated against.

Where were all the entertainers when the racist government of zimbabwe was stealing the property of its citizens based solely on the color of their skin? Where was all the media fuss about the racist government of zimbabwe? Why wasn't Jesse Jackson marching with the oppressed while singing "we shall overcome?"

/spit

When I was in the RSA some years back, the whites I spoke with (mostly well-to-do business types) all admitted after a drink or two that they had one foot in South Africa and one foot in [New Zealand/Australia/United States/insert refuge of choice]. Back then, they said they were getting as much of their assets off shore as they possibly could, in anticipation of the coming implosion.

Their time estimates may have been off by a bit, but not by much.

What a beautiful, tortured land.
