Hi... new to this so please bear with me. I bough a ruger sp101 about 4 months ago, I love the size and carriability of the gun. I dont expect the 3 1/16 barrel to shoot 1" hundred yard groups, or 100 yards at all for that matter. My ruger shoots about a 3" group at 30 yards wich to me is great for the size of the gun.... here is where my complaint comes in; I have filed the front sight ( non-adjustable) as much as i can, and it is fine elevation wise but prints roughly 6" to the left! Do you think ruger would make this right for me? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Have you tried different ammo? Different brands and weights will yield different results. My Sp101 does not like Remington it has never printed well regardless of Gr. My GP100 shoots it fine. Both guns do well with Federal and even Winchester. The GP100 does well with 158 gr. The SP101 seems to do best with 140 gr JHPs. It could be an ammo issue. If you haven't already, try to experiment with some different types of ammo before altering the sights. Also, are you shooting from a bench rest or free hand? I dont know if your right or left handed, but you could be pulling or pushing when squeezing the trigger, even so slightly. It doesn't take much and it can be off by a mile. You can try to alter you grip or finger postion to compensate. Also a 3" grouping at 30 yards with a SP101 with a 3" barrel isnt too bad at all.
Good luck

Shooting left is usually the shooter but sometimes its not. If the barrel wasn't turned so the sight is in the 12 O'clock position, the barrel wasn't drilled on center or you have damage to the crown. If it shoots left for more than one shooter and does so when fired single action off bench and bags with factory ammo or even better a ransom rest then its the sights. Return to the factory for repair.

I would try different ammo and put the gun in a rest before I sent it off to Ruger.

I'd put it on a rest too. I'm hoping you don't discover you filed the front sight down when the real problem was a flinch.

35 Marlin,

I had great service from Ruger when I explained to them that Wadcutter bullets from my new GP100 hit sideways at 25 yards. They picked up the gun, put on a new barrel and several other parts, returned it, and now wadcutters make round holes at 25 yards. I am pleased.

But that was a "problem" that could be clearly defined and was not likely to be something the shooter was doing.

When I had a similar problem to yours with an SP101 (but in the other direction) I decided it could be simply the way I hold the gun so I didn't bother to call them about it.

I bought that 2" SP101 last fall. It looked, functioned, and measured the way a revolver should. I was delighted with it until I took it to the range and found that for me, it shot well to the right with every load I tried.

I could move the group up and down with bullet weight, but it always hit to the right. Specifically, at 25 yards, the center of the group was completely off the right edge of a standard paper plate.:(

When I looked very carefully at the barrel, it appeared to be screwed into the frame too much so that the front sight was past top-center (which would result in the group striking to the right (or anyway, that was my guess).

I sold the gun to someone that will use it for ccw and does not plan to use the sights anyway.;)

A couple of weeks ago I found a used SP101 that again looked, functioned, and measured OK --- but this time, since it was a used gun, I got my retailer to agree that I could bring it back for a refund if it did not hit close to POA.:)

Anyway, this SP101 hits so close to POA at 25 yards that I shot our local Bullseye Match with it last week and could hold "center" on the target.

I got lucky with the second SP101 and am most pleased!:)

I would suggest that you have some other experienced shooters try your SP101 and see where it hits for them.

If your SP101 hits 6" left for other shooters, call Ruger and explain the problem. Ruger has excellent customer service and may be willing to examine the gun and perhaps "adjust" your barrel or install another one. It costs nothing to ask.

JMHO

Agreed on trying different ammo and also on shooting from a rest. Maybe have someone else try it too.
Having said that, fixed sights can be off. If you can't get it sorted out I'm just about certain Ruger will fix it for you with a minimal amount hassle.
One time I bought a used fixed sight Bisely and Ruger offered to fix that for me free of charge.
