Does anyone know where there are any forum topics on Ruger #1 big-bore conversions?

I am interested in converting a #1 to something larger than 458 Lott, like one of the SSK .50 caliber rounds, or 500NE. SSK has the .50 Alaskan or 50x3.25" etc. I know recoil gets emmense, but I will install lead weight and a damping butt system.

Basically I emailed SSK, and they told me $1300-1500. I didn't think this sounded right on a $700 rifle. Shouldn't the action only require minor modification to feed and eject the round? I can't see where this cost comes from when there is only bolt face work needed (I believe). But I am not experienced with this type of conversion, so maybe it is me who is assuming wrong.

Can someone describe some other shops who could do this as well? I can have the barrel made myself, or if the price is right have it done with the action. I just want to get it done without paying an arm and a leg.

Thanks.

Pop over to the accuratereloading.com forum and go into the big bore or African section and talk with those guys and gals there.

I hav on of the 45-70's converted to the 450 3 1/4" Nitro

Try Shaw barrels, ask them, they do all sorts of things for downright reasonable rates
