Ruger 10/22 ammo suggestions

MK VII,
good point. I think I'll start with the bulk stuff I bought them run my tests.
if all you really intend to do with a magazine like this is strictly non life threatening
I hope that I never have to use a .22 to end a life threatening situation! I think I'd choose any of my other guns first assuming I have ammo for them. Now if I get attacked my zombie bunnies from hell they'd better come in waves of 10 or less;)

Ruger 10-22

I like federal as well. The Federal AM-22 bulk target ammo (320 for $9) at Walmart is the most accurate and consistant for me. Federal 810 is great as well as CCI blue, but AM-22 is overall the best in my gun.

I've had great luck with CCI Blazer and Federal bulk pack in my 10/22s for plinking ammo. In factory barrels, CCI Mini-Mag seems to shoot the best for me.

The Tactical Innovations 25 round composite magazines work well for me, once they are adjusted properly for the gun. http://www.tacticalinc.com/ti25-advanced-composite-steel-magazine-ruger-1022-p-532.html

I've found that the best way to adjust them is to take the action out of the stock so you can see how the screws meet the action rails and adjust the screws out until the mag latches in straight and square and level. Mine will feed reliably with standard velocity ammo and a match chamber, which is pretty good for an aftermarket mag. They only work in the gun they are adjusted for, though.

I have never had much luck with the bulk pack ammo. The cheaper stuff just seems to lack the power to cycle my rifle reliably. Out of all the bulk packs Federal seems to work the best as with it I only get a stove pipe every 9 rounds or so, CCI Mini Mags and Stingers run flawlessly however. The factory Ruger mags work the best IMO and most Wal-Marts carry them for cheap. I have Ramline 30 rounders and while they function reliably they only hold 27 rounds and will split along the seams down the middle over time. Its a shame Bill Ruger has to be such a commie and not sell factory high caps to us serfs :( .

I think it's more of a production management thing.
A few states have mag-cap laws and making special mags for them would make production harder. One of them (California) is the biggest market in the US, so not being able to sell there would really hurt profits.

Or he is just a commie bastard:neener:

the tatical inc mags look good...if they only offered a 10 rd version I'd be in buisness. I think for the price difference I'll just stick with Ruger mags until I move somewhere that allows Hi-Cap mags.

No hes just a commie bastard. It all goes back to Bill Rugers famous "no honest man needs more than 10 rounds" speech" he gave back in 89. Ruger agreed to stop selling high caps to anyone but law enforcement and military before the 94 ban. It stinks because with the 10/22 and mini14 factory high caps are hard to find and very expensive. Very few aftermarket mags fuction very well in either of them. As it is now I think only 4 or 5 states have restrictions on capacity so selling high caps to the rest of us shouldnt be a problem.

I forgot about that speach (could be that I was 7 when he made it:neener: )

Yes, I now remember. Maybe I should have gotten the marlin instead...

Wait half my guns are from commie bastards already, never mind.

I have three hot lips mags - red plastic ones - for about ten years. Thousands of rounds have passed thru them - they work perfect. What are you doing to these clips that you need steel?

CCI Stinger rounds are awsome

My 10/22 has a carbon fiber bull barrel and a target stock with built in bipod - love that gun

.22 comparison

I'm going to the indoor 25yrd range tuesday night. I was planning to shoot CCI Mini-Mags, Federal Bulk and Winchester Bulk. I can do a range report if anyone is interested.

the normal action of the bolt passin over the lips causes them to wear down the small parts that keep the cartridge down. when they wear out, the cartridges will start to go nose-up and produces FTFs.

As had been said much in this thread, most 10/22's will take anything you can throw at them. I negleted mine for much of it's life (never really cleaned it well) and it's never had a malfuntion. I've had missfires caused by ammo, but never the rifle. I bought it used 8 years ago, completely stock as it is today. I've had the same 25 shot hot lips mag and speed loader, and haven't really ever had a problem with it either.

Ruger 10/22 Ammo

I have have three different models of 10/22. Standard, Delux
Sporter and the target. The first two will digest and function with
everything I feed it, and with all the above mags without a hitch.
The standard is very accurate with the Delux showing preference
to a few different brands. The target is disappointing as it will
begin to group and open at the forth round. Will have to work
with this one as it could be a bedding problem or scope defective
None of the rifles have failed to feed or fire.

I was using some CCI mini-mags and got some easy .75" groups at 25 yards with my stock 10/22 with a 2.5x32mm scope. I say they were easy because I had the gun on a plastic barrel clamp bipod, and I was using one hand to rest the back of the gun and fire it, the other hand wasn't doing anything.

However, when I started to group seriously, I couldn't seem to beat the .75" groupings.

Lapua in the cold

Earlier I posted that the Lapua Club ammo was the most accurate in my 20yr old 10/22. I was recently notified that it was back in stock at MidSouth so I wanted to try it in my Neos to see if it was worth ordering more. Went to an indoor range. The outside temperature was 9F, and I'm absolutely sure it was below freezing indoors. I took several brands to try and interestingly the Lapua had problems with the cold. The bullets kept sticking together. It appears whatever lube they put on them doesn't like the cold. Had several jams and it was just harder to load because of the sticking. I was shooting off hand so couldn't get a real good feeling for the groups but they were no worse than the others.

CCI Mini-Mag works very well. Stingers do, too.

New 'milk carton' remington is dirty and inconsistant---but very cheap at Farm and Fleet.

Critics asside, ramline hi-cap mags work fine. They're plastic. They are easier on the aluminum parts if the weapon than non-factory steel (unless you're gentle in which case it matter not).

I have been using the same 2 I bought at a Service Merchandise with the gun in 1986. At least a few thousand through each. They were 5 bucks new and the rifle about $129. No, don't hit them with a hammer.

My point being, if someone has some for a couple bucks--they are worth the trouble. Stay away from 50 rd abominations and you'll be fine.

Okay I've shot federal and ficochi (evil) and cci and the federal shot best. Got three hotlips mags and they seam to work okay. Will post next trip when they get used.

I did quite a bit of ammo testing with my 10/22 this fall, and after running 20+ types of ammo through it, the Remington Golden Bullet shot as good as anything. I seem to remember that there was one higher dollar ammo that outshot it, but not by much, and it certainly didn't justify the cost difference.

These things are so different in what they like, just be sure not to neglect the cheap ammo when you test it. You may get lucky like I did.

I've never had problems with it eating any ammo, and I've only got one aftermarket plastic lips magazine. It's not effective as a 25 round mag, but it functions okay as a 22 round mag. I just stick with the factory mags normally, and get the little plastic dealies to clip two or four of them together. Here's a link.
