ruger 10/22 barrels

I have a Green Mountain with a Stinger chamber. It's crazy accurate, will feed and fire just about anything, and mine is drilled and tapped for the Volquartsen scope mount which is a nice feature. The Butler Creek tension barrel I had on it before was just too light to hold steady. The 16" GM seems to be a better over-all package.

I have it setup in a scout configuration by putting the scope mount on backwards. It works really well, even with the cheap $30 2-7x scope I'm using with it.

RFC has the real skinny, but just thought I'd share my experience and use this as an excuse to post a pic

This website has lots of premium barrels. Green Mountain, Volquartsen, Majestic Arms, and factory Ruger barrels.

Prices look very reasonable, but I have not personally dealt with this company.

I'm in the process of ordering an ER Shaw barrel (homepage). They are decently priced and very good according to the boys over at rimfirecentral, plus the helical fluting is funky.

I would stay away from Butler Creek barrels, especially their carbon fiber barrels.

ER Shaw looks like a good option, too. Decent pricing. I just priced out a blued 18 inch with fluting, and it is $142.

I'm about to re-barrel a 10/22 with a blued fluted barrel. Good luck in finding a GM barrel in stock anywhere. Everywhere I look, they are on Backorder.


Side note. I have two Walnut stocks for this rifle. (long story) I really want to keep the firearm "original" looking in terms of stock. I don't care if the barrel is a bull barrel though. Has anyone had any luck opening up the channel on an original Ruger 10/22 Walnut stock for the .920 barrels?

Does the barrel strap fit right or would I had to dremel out one to line up right? (I have two of those, too.)

JWarren if it were me I would get a Green Mountain running boar barrel for one of those stocks and a heavy sporter for the other. They shoot just as accurate as the bull barrels and will fit with no mods. The running boar has perfect balance for off hand shooting. Besides that they look really cool too.

Has anyone had any luck opening up the channel on an original Ruger 10/22 Walnut stock for the .920 barrels?

I sanded out the barrel channel on a Ruger walnut stock using sandpaper wrapped around a 7/8" wooden dowel. It worked well, though it did take some time & patience. I don't believe the barrel band will fit over a .920" barrel without some work. I think most of the folks at rimfirecentral.com leave it off after they've installed a bull barrel.

If it were me I'd be tempted to find a GM sporter contour barrel and not have to deal with modifying the stock or the barrel band. bamabluesman's suggestion of the Running Boar barrel is a good one too, I'd like to try one of those myself. Try hornetproducts.com - I've purchased from them in the past and had good results, and they carry a good selection of parts.
