newbie ruger owner confused and kinda upset. Two weeks ago my son bought his first rifle, a ruger 10/22 carbine. Believe it or not he got it from walmart. We went to the range last friday and the rifle performed like a real champ. Cleaned and lightly lubed afterwards.Took it to the range today, and nothing. The rifle refused to feed even one round. When the magazine is out the bolt action appears to be real smoothe. We tried two different brands of ammo and the same results. The rifle appears to be trying to load shell into chamber but gets it about half the way there and the bolt stops about 1/3 of the way open.We are not rifle experts, but we have heard that the 10/22 ruger is a good rifle. We are beginning to wonder if that is true. I called ruger today and they listened to my story and immediately said we will send you a new mag, so they are sending one. By the way i also bought him a butler creek steellips 25 rd mag for it too, and that one won't feed either.Has anyone had problems like this, any thoughts. Since they are sending a new mag i guess we will wait and try that. I'am going to take the ruger to a trusted local gunsmith and have him look at it to see if there is another obvious problem existing we don't know about. And this is the kicker.... If we want it serviced by ruger we will have to pay the freight there, along with a 20.00 service fee along with another 12.50 for them to ship it back. I can see paying the freight there but , a service fee on a new warranteed rifle? Some guarantee. Can't see ever recommending ruger to someone else. My other son has a mossberg 702 plinkster costing half the price and it outperforms this thing hands down. Sorry , i guess i'm venting a little. Nothing like having a frustrated young adult regretting his first firearm purchase.

Were you using Remington Thunderbolts when the problems started happening? What other ammo did you try?

Which ammo brands did you try? I'm curious as to why it won't manual feed.

BTW: Don't use match ammo when breaking in a 10/22. Use the higher velocity stuff.

ruger 10/22 misfeed problem.

no we were not using remington thunderbolts, and yes we did try different brands of ammo, and the rifle fired the same ammo last week just fine.

Try doing something more major than a light lube like you did before. Put some grease on the inside of the receive, maybe take steel wool to the inside of the receive to take down any little micro-burrs that are in there. And make sure the bolt and received are well lubed and it should feed like a champ! :)

When the gun was cleaned, was the receiver/trigger assembly disassembled? (That is, what did you do, exactly, to clean the gun? Just clean through the ejection port and mag well or did you disassemble the receiver/stock/barrel?)

Did you perhaps not get things back together properly? They can dislike certain ammo but they're not that finiky. I'd say head to www.rimfirecentral.com and inquire there. Much better info to be found there on these little gems than anywhere else on the web.

Check the magazind receiving pins in the receiver. It sounds like the magazine is sitting too low in relation to the bore. Mabey an obstruction in the stock or receiver. Mabey gunk in the hole for the rear magazine pin or the front mag hole. Check the top of the magwell.

Clean the chamber and try some CCI mini mags. New 10/22's can need some break in and I've seen several stutter when using standard velocity ammo in the first 1000 or so.

My nephew's was doing the same thing. When the rifle was new,he did not clean the bolt thoroughly and the extractor and firing pin had a bunch of crap basicaly melted to it.Took the bolt assy and soaked and scrubbed it and now works fine. One way to tell is to very carefully take a bullet and load in the magazine, release the bolt slowly and see where it's hanging up.then look at the bolt face where the firng pin is-more than likely you'll see where it is hitting-it'll will jam the bullet in at the wrong angle and will not feed. It's because the firing pin is loaded up w/crap and not returning to the correct position. At least that is what was wrong w/his...oh,buy the way his was a laminated stock/stainless limited edition and had a fair amt of grease in it.If you didn't take it apart and clean it very well before shooting,i would bet that will fix it.

if you want me to,i'll take mine apart and try to take some photos that may show things better than i can explain it.

Another vote here to clean the rifle and the mag really well.

It is amazing how many problems can be solved for .22 pistols and rifles (especially newer ones) with a thorough clean and lube job.

Make sure you clean the chamber area really well with a brush and solvent. Just a little grit/gunk in there can keep rounds from feeding into the chamber as intended. They go part way in and stop. Your problem sounds sort of like that.

I had a similar problem with a Ruger Mark II .22 pistol until I really cleaned/scrubbed the chamber with a brass brush. It's slick now.
