I purchased a base model Ruger 10/22 yesterday. I took it hope and cleaned and oiled it. I took it to the range, and 1 out of every 10 casings failed to eject(I was using the Federal .22 lr ammunition from Walmart). I spoke with one of the guys who worked at the range, and he said he thought it was the ammunition. I got a little box of 50 Remington High Velocity .22 lr and they shot without a problem. I'm pretty sure that narrows it down to the ammunition. Has anyone else had problem with Federal .22 in 10/22's? I don't know what to do with 400 rounds I have left.

i have 3 10/22s. a friend also has 3, and another friend has one. they all eat federal bulk pack fine.

the factory extractors are junk. replace it with the $10 VQ extractor and it'll eat anything.

i've had no FTE with federal after doing the mod, and before it would perform like yours.

the only 22 ammo i think is junk is remmington bulk pack.

I've got two of them and neither one likes the fed. 22 ammo. will eat anything else with no problem so I use the fed. stuff in my henry lever.

10/22's can be picky about ammo as said, especially when new. Mine is old and loose and does fine with pretty much anything now but initially the only ammo it seemed to like was expensive Eley stuff and god help me back then the remington thunderbolts. I cleaned the gun A LOT

I have a 10/22 and had the same problem. IMHO, you just need to "break it in" with some Mini-mags. Some people recommend at least 500 rounds, which I'm sure is great but I noticed I stopped having troubles with Federal bulk pack after about 200 rounds of CCI MiniMags.

Mine eats federal fine, I got a brick of that with my 10/22 and didn't have any problems (except through the first mag full in a BC mag, after that it functioned fine). I shoot mini-mags now because it was more accurate and we already had a case of it. Shoot the heck out of it and it should work fine once it gets some more ammo through it. You can get a better extractor but it shouldn't have a problem with the stock one (I don't like putting band-aids on problems until I find out what the cause is). Is the extractor lined up ok in the barrel? That's usually not a problem unless you remove and reinstall the barrel but ya never know.

Does anyone know of a website that explains how to replace the extractor if I do in fact replace it?

Instructions were included in the package with mine too.

Basically disassemble the pistol, remove the bolt, remove the firing pin retaining pin, firing pin, spring etc. The with a large safety pin tip (diaper pin) depress the lever that pushes against the extractor where the round hole in the slot is. Once the lever is retracted towards the read or the gun you can push the extractor back and up and it pops right out. Reverse the steps to replace.

Mine went from jam-o-matic with Federal WalMart bulk pack to zero problems other than a few duds and weak rounds that fail to cycle the bolt (clears like a dud, but an empty pops out instead) after replacing extractor and spring with the Power Custom Titanium Sharp Claw from MidWay (only one they had in stock when I needed mine).

I went ahead and ordered the VQ etractor and VQ bolt buffer from rimfiresports.com. Even if the problem is bad ammo, I need to get these two parts anyway. We'll see if it fixes my problem.

Just a htought, did you compare the case length of hte FTE rounds iwth the ones that worked fine?

Mine loves everything except the birdshot crap, that stuff fires fine, but just blows into the rifling and jams.

Just run a couple of hundred round of what it likes and then it should digest just about anything

This thread inspired me to shoot mine today
It's still cloverleafing at the distances I shot at (20-50yds) today. It's not stock anymore but not a full-on 10/22-stein. I had to adjust the scope way down because the last time I shot it was at 120yds so I was printing a bit high.

eventer289,

I went thru the same thing with my 10/22 a couple of years ago.

As far as changing out the extractor, it's pretty simple, and the VQ is a fine replacement, very sharp the whole length of the extractor.

What I was doing wrong was using too much oil. The oil was gumming up on the boltface, and the extractor could not grab the rim of the cartridge correctly.

I now use 1 small drop on the top of the bolt, and that is all.

I now shoot Fed Bulk Pack exclusively for plinking.

it's not necessary to remove the firing pin from the bolt to replace the extractor, btw...

there's not a single thing you can do to that rifle that you can't do yourself. the average DIY'er can have it completely apart and back together without issue.

i over-oil with CLP. never an issue. after about a brick of ammo i open the action, turn it upside down and give a blast of CLP again. i don't clean the barrel until accuracy drops off (1500-2000 rounds) but i do clean the action after everytime i go out to shoot.

Give it sufficient break-in time, try different ammo, change the extractor if necessary (and IMHO, this is desirable), and when you settle on one ammo stick with it, then adjust the spring tension in the magazine(s) to the point you get reliable feeds. Also add a buffer pin; there are many iterations available and all will add years to the life of the bolt. I've tinkered with 10/22s for years . . . there is a plethora of both aftermarket parts & a wealth of information available . . . RimfireCentral is a goldmine of both & the rifles are quite simple to work on as long as you are willing to research and learn (when you disassemble the original extractor from the bolt, do so in a clear plastic bag large enough to contain the bolt AND your hands ~ saves time looking for the spring when it launches). This one is the latest of several I've modified and consistently maintains <3/8" 5-shot groups with match ammo at 50-yards; I get the occasional flyer with lesser ammo and I tend to favor Winchester power points & shy away from cheap ammo, particularly Federal. I own several 10/22s & am currently working on a pistol-stocked version (of legal barrel & overall rifle length . . . should be a hoot when it's done.). Good luck & enjoy the addiction (should you opt to customize).

Just get a box of 500 and blast through it you'll get plenty of problems but afterwards you'll probably have zero. If still have FTE problems, I'd just take out the extractor and true the hook a little bit with a nice jeweler's file or even a smooth emery board. If still for naught, get an extact edge.
