Ruger 10/22 Jam Issue

I have a Ruger 10/22 that has had about 800-1000 rounds ran through it. The issue I am having with it is that regardless of what magazine is being used, it stove pipe jams after firing the 3rd to last round in a magazine, every single time, its always the 3rd to last round.

This happens with new 10rd magazines, vintage used 10rd magazines, and also the Ruger BX-25 mag.

This problem also happens regardless of the type of ammo being used and was present before and after replacing the extractor with a volquartsen extractor.

Any ideas as to what I should do to remedy this issue?

Too weird, how does it know when only four rounds are in the magazine so it can jam the next shot?

The "drag" on the bolt form the top round in the magazine will vary some from fully loaded to empty and maybe at 4 rounds its at its maximum which slow things down just enough to not fully eject the empty causing the stovepipe.

Take the gun down and give the bolt and its channel a good cleaning.


I've seen similar problems with a Taurus 9mm 1911 magazine, but it was confined to a single magazine, after the second shot (third if loaded 9+1) the magazine will spit out a loaded round which either causes a "double feed" jam or or just ejects giving one less shot from the pistol than expected (and there is a loaded round among the empties on the ground). I assume this is when the drag force on the feed lips is minimum and the round spits out when the slide hits the frame. If I clear the jam, reinsert the round in the mag, it will feed from a slingshot and all the remaining rounds feed fine.

I ended up junking the magazine since Taurus uses a goofy looking spring and I didn't feel like hassling with calling them to do something about such a bizarre problem.

Does it seem to be a function of how fast you are shooting? It almost sounds like you shoot 7, then things have heated up enough to cause the failure. Stop, get it fixed, things cool off enough to continue...

I have encountered 10/22 trigger groups where the ejector is not quite over far enough, and as the group heats up, expansion moves it over far enough to start missing the fired case. Took me awhile to figure that one out

I like your hypothesis, but I took the OP's comment about even with a BX mag to mean it fires 22 shots and then stovepipes, But if he really meant to say it also stovepipes on the 7th shot I'd say you may be onto the explanation and solution!

OP, do you grab 3 rounds and load the mag and then grab more and continue to load?

If so, maybe your loading the 3rd round funny... not pushing it all the way back into the mag.


Pay close attention to your loading process.

Thank you Wally for your advice on drag.
I replaced the recoil spring and rod and that fixed the issue. After taking a look at it, the rod had a very slight bend in it.
Replacing this has solved the issue. It now shoots flawlessly.
