im looking at getting a ruger 10/22 again. it will look something like this.
712h6xx.gif

on a .920 target barrel and a fajen adjustable stock. is it possible to get 2" groups at 200yds?

What is a good scope to get? I was looking at the super sniper scopes and they come in 10x, 16x and 20x. Are these fixed power? Thanks

2 inches at 200 yards with a .22 seems pretty darn optimistic to me. I think you will be limited by the ammo/caliber more then the platform.

what kind of groups should I expect at 200yds with CCI Green Tag ammunition with a .920 target bull barrel?

what power scope (10x, 16x, 20x) should I get to see clearly at 200yds.

The wind has a tremendous affect on .22 LR bullets, the slightest breeze can push them inches off target at longer ranges. The .17 HMR would be a better choice for 200 yard rimfire shooting.

I have a Mueller APV 4.5-14 AO scope which is about the best rimfire scope you can get for the money and it doesn't have enough height adjustment to shoot 200 yards with .22LR. Even if you could shoot indoors at 200 you're not gonna group 2 inches. You may consider converting the 10/22 to 17HM2. It shoots very flat and can do 200 but the wind is still gonna be a huge factor.

I have a BSA that will get me out to 200 yards but precision doesn't exist at those ranges with a .22lr

the super snipers are fixed, but they do have one that is a variable. the cci green tags, and anything subsonic, actually moves less in the wind, than one that drops out of supersonic, i would just be surprised, if greentag even makes it the 200 yds!!!! Also , if you want precision shooting out to 200 yds, you will def have to replace that bbl.

I have pretty much the exact set-up you describe, and I don't want to sound harsh or mean, but your dreaming if you think your going to shoot inside of two inches with a .22lr with any set-up. I would be impressed if you could shoot inside of two feet at that distance, and I am not joking when I say that.

I tried some quite long shots with 10/22 last summer.
Not sure about the exact range but it was somewhere near 300meters.
Wasnt too easy even with the 20x scope, since you cant adjust it that far with 22LR. I was shooting much higher than the actual target and the best I could do was to hit a beer can. I guess something like 5"-8" could be a realistic group from that far.

300 meters hitting a beer can is WAY better than I could do with a .22lr .. Wind would be my biggest issue I am sure

I have 10-22 customs with over $1600 poured into them and I would not even attempt 200 yd shots with either one! My .17 Mach2 will not shoot consistant 2" groups at 100 yds with no wind. Simply stated, the .22 LR cartridge is not a 200 yd weapon system regardless of your hardware. Maybe I will take some Ballons to the range with me next trip and see how much holdover is necessary for a shot like that. I would expect something like 6'
+1 on the Mortar man!
Ballistics software is showing me a drop on a subsonic 40 gr at around 75"! In my research I have read of 1" groups at 200 yds using the best available ammo and rifle. 10-22 is not that rifle!
If you figure MOA, you would have to be shooting 1/4" groups at 100 yds to stay around 2" at 200.
I would like to see a 300 yd shot! holdover would be in the 12 foot area and an insect exhaling would give you windage issues.

About that beer can shot :
Wasnt the first, wasnt even the second or the third shot that hit it.
The can was standing in front of a tree where I had painted dots going up the tree. Finally I aimed the dot that was about 2meters high. that was the can hitting shot. Cant talk of any kind of accuracy.
But anyway....as an experiment it was fun. Next summer I gotta try 500meters.( LOL I gotta aim 10 meters higher.)

.22LR at 200 yards?

Yes, and beyond! Shepherd manufactures a calibrated scope for .22LR with 50 yards increments out to 500 yards.

The most accurate .22LR I have owned was a Ruger 10/22 HB. At 225 yards, using a bi-pod and sandbag on the bench, I maintained MOA groups all day long, using Remington Thunderbolts. I dropped several woodchucks with neck/head-shots. I have this posted several times around THR.

Here's mine, I just love this thing.
About 5000 rounds through it so far, very few hitches. The odd stopage or stovepipe but usually with ****ty banana mags.
Decently accurate on a nice rest setup

200 yard shot with a .22? Someone's been watching Shooter too much lately. :p

That notwithstanding, sounds like an interesting question. I'll see what I can pull off at that range with a .22 bolt gun, though I don't expect to get anything better than a 12" group or so.

100 yard shots with groups with a .22 is incredibly tough. I'll applaud you if you do 1" groups at that distance.. 200 yards? pssh, you wont even know if you're hitting in the zone or not, until you get dialed in that is. You'll probably need a runner up there to look-see for you..

I gotta tell you, it's the ammo and barrel/trigger than anything else in the rimfire game. More so on the ammo and barrel. Good luck.
