Hello,
New to the forum and any help is greatly appreciated! So here is the deal, I got a brand new Ruger 10/22 takedown for Christmas and took it out today to try it out. I have tried several different brands of ammo as well as a couple different magazines with no luck. It won't even dry fire. Thoughts?

Details please? What do you mean it won't fire? Does the bolt cock? Does the trigger release the firing pin? Does the ammo fire in other guns? Is the safety on?

Could be any of a dozen things causing the problem. When you say it won't even dry fire I assume you work the action and then what? Safety off and no click when the trigger is pulled? If you are doing everything by the book, correctly loading and chambering a round from the magazine and the rifle won't fire or even go click it's time to return it. Some retailers will take a return or next step is your rifle takes a road trip to Ruger.

Welcome to THR!

I see BetaProfessor was quicker than I on the keyboard but those questions need answered.

Safety is off.
Ammo used in my buddies 10/22 works fine.
All magazines work fine in his as well.
No click when trigger is pulled almost feels as if the safety is on.

If you are mechanically inclined; remove it from the stock, push out the two pins holding the trigger housing to the receiver. Inspect the trigger group for missing parts. Most likely the hammerstrut and spring have popped out of place. Consult online references for a diagram showing proper placement.
If other parts are broken or missing call Ruger.

Remember to put the safety in the middle position as per the manual when removing or replacing the stock.

That description makes it sound like the trigger and/or the hammer isn't resetting. Unload the rifle. Pull the cocking handle all the way to the rear as you normally would and release it. Pull the handle again, this time slowly and pay attention to when you start to feel significant resistance. If it's right from the beginning the hammer isn't being caught by the sear. In that case, hold the rifle so it is pointing vertically and give it a vigorous up and down shake. Listen for a sharp ticking sound as you do so. If it is present, likely the sear spring is broken or missing.

If you get about one inch of free travel before the cocking handle encounters resistance the hammer is catching. Pull the handle to the rear again and hold it there. Pull the trigger and hold it to the rear, then release the cocking handle. Release the trigger and listen for a click. If you don't hear it, push the trigger forward manually as far as it will go. If you still don't hear it click the disconnector isn't resetting. If it does click the trigger return spring isn't functioning correctly.

Ruger will take care of it since it is brand new, but it might be helpful to your peace of mind to at least have an idea of what's going wrong.

If it's brand new 7 days ago?

Take it back to the dealer it was purchased from and exchange it for one that works!!!!

Yes. Messing with it yourself will void the warranty.

Thanks all. I have emailed Ruger and should hear back from them Monday. With it being a new gun I think I will just let them fix it rather than tearing it apart and voiding the warranty. I will keep you posted on what they say and thanks again.

You just may want to follow up with a phone call to customer service. Phone calls tend to get things resolved quicker than emails. :)

No click of the trigger? First, since it's under warranty, I'd send it to a warranty station.

Sounds like a trigger group issue. Perhaps the hammer isn't being held back by the sear.

I second taking it back to the dealer. If it was a new car that wasn't working right, would anyone suggest shipping it to the factory, or tell the owner to "just try this or that"?

These are simple guns. I'm surprised there's a problem. Most likely, though, something got fubared in the tolerances of the trigger housing. They're plastic nowadays. Although they generally have better tolerances than the old metal ones, things can still happen.
