I think the TBBC will be just fine for deer out of a .260, there is a really good chance you will have an exit wound. The great penatration will let your young shooter take a less than broad-side shot it the need should arise.

I used the tbbc out of a 300wm to shoot almost through a bull elk on a hard quartering away shot and it expanded like I expected and held its weight well.
 
I have had great results with my Hawkeye. I bought one in a 25-06 this spring. It seems to like both the Hornady Customs in 117grain Nosler boatails, and the Federal Vital Shocks in 117 grain Sierra gamekings.

I also have a .260 compact and have learned a little about it over the last year or so. I started off loading 130 gr. Scirrocos and got around 2" grouping with velocity a couple hundred fps lower than most manuals stated. I was expecting that and the 2" group wasn't too bad for a pencil barrel. I noticed quickly that my beloved scirrocos were not destroying pigs like they did in other calibers. They just punched a clean hole!!! After recovering two bullets (with metal detector) that had shot through pigs and into the ground I discovered that the scirrocos were not opening up well. Not a design flaw but just running a little slow. I switched to a cheap 120 gr. Speer soft point and group size dropped to 1", velocity is good at about 2850 fps, and they open up well.

To answer your question in short. I think the Bear Claws may need more velocity than your compact will give to open up well(especially in a whitetail). Try some different 120 grainers or better yet Roll Your Own.

Thanks for the help!! I do reload, just haven't bought dies for it yet!! I was actually gonna try the scirrocos first, I'm glad u posted, I think I will try the 120 grain nosler ballistic tips now.
