I just sold a M77 tang safety in .300 win mag. It had a 3-9 Burris Fullfield II scope on it. The bore was in good condition, the stock was scratched up but not cracked or gouged. It also had a Ruger aftermarket steel floor plate/trigger guard. I sold it for $465 + shipping.
Some like the older tang safety's a little better, but the newer Mk-II's and Hawkeyes are much better rifles. If you just like the tang safety's better it might be worth as much as 75-80% of a new rifle. Or around $500-$550. To most people no more than 50% of what a new rifle costs. I would pass all together and hold out for a newer gun, but around $350-$400 is as much as most people would pay.
Some of those older guns shot great, others were very poor. Ruger did not make the barrels for those, but purchased them from various outside vendors. How well they shot depended on who made that individual barrel. Knowing the guns history and if it were a good shooter would add some piece of mind, and a little more value to me.
If I were selling I'd ask $400+, buying I'd say $350-. I have bought a bunch of them with good real glass over the years for $350 and down but recent prices are to volatile to guess unless you are pretty in tune to the market your in.
Parts for the Tang safety 77's are getting harder to find.
Probably my favorite rifles. The safety is quick, quiet, and in the perfect position. All of mine and my buddy's have been very accurate. They range in age from my '76 to '90.
