Ruger Alaskan?

Anyone have one of these gorgeous pieces of art? I'd buy one in a heartbeat! If you've got one/fired one, how is it?

I have the .454 Casull. It's a great "little" revolver. Heavy for a snubbie but I wouldn't want to shoot a full power .454 out of anything lighter.

I was showing a female friend how to shoot for the first time. She liked the Alaskan best (compared to my XDs in 9mm and .45 acp). She was shooting cowboy loaded .45 LC. Then I shot a couple medium power Casull rounds and she wanted to try it. She fired two rounds and did VERY well for a first time shooter.

I wear gloves when I'm shooting full power Buffalo Bore rounds for fun. Without the gloves, the trigger guard slaps my trigger finger pretty good and annoys me.

I am realizing that I'm a recoil junky though.

SWMBO bought one for me a couple of months ago. I really like the heft of the piece. I'm using a 300gr hollowpoint magnum cartridge and find the recoil very managable. As far as accuracy, at 15 meters I'm putting 5 out of six into a standard playing card. At 7 and 10 meters, it's six for six. I'm so impressed with this firearm that it's my preferred every day carry. I open carry when I'm on my bike, but I CCW most other times. It's hard to conceal with the Hogue grips, but do-able.

I'm thinking of buying the same gun. Something about it just says "tough". I've never shot one, but I've heard that .454 shells will sometimes stick in that gun. Anybody have other issues we should know about?

This is my Alaskan in 454/45LC! How does it shoot? Depends! In 45LC it is a relative pussy cat. However, there is a wide variety of loads for the 45LC and some of them turn the Alaskan into a real tiger.

Pretty much the same scenario for 454 loads. There is a wide variety of selection for the 454 and, as you might suspect, the larger the bullet weight the more recoil.

The ergonomics of the gun make it a pretty soft shooter overall but some of the big 454 stuff is really intimidating. However, if a grizzly is staring me in the wilderness it is sure what I would want. Overall? Sweet revolver

Man, I love the looks of that wheeler! Mainsail, did you take that picture? It's nicely done! To Dairycreek, the bandanna background is really neat, I've never thought of using one! I'd get one in a 1/4 heartbeat, but the $ is what holds me back. If I do get a moderately-priced handgun, this'll be it for sure. I like thick, chunky grips. By the looks of it, she will fit better than a well-fitting glove.

Count me in, I have a new one in .44Mag. Terrific piece, great balance and very accurate all this and a very good trigger to boot!
I just ordered a Sourdough holster from Simply Rugged and should have it this week.
All in all a great revolver package.

I have the .454 one and it shoots real good, packs ALOT of punch for the size and weight it is, carrys nice on your hip or crossdraw, and it always with me hiking, fishing, and sometimes when hunting. Its a real strong and reliable piece...

I couldn't shoot mine very well with the stock grip, and I even considered selling it, although I really liked it.
I put on the standard Super RedHawk grip and shoot it much better now. I prefer the smaller grips for carry too.
Good gun if you need something small(ish) to defend against fangs and claws in the woods.
