Ruger American Gen II

@ditmo if you ever want to clean up your shooting life and rid yourself of that distraction from all your other firearms...let me know on the M77 7.62x39.

J/K I would love to find one, I've watched Gunbroker but they go for $$$!

@BreechFace when I bought the M77 Hawkeye it wasn't that expensive. Neither was my CZ 527. It's a toss up which I like better. There's just something about wood and steel. These are probably the last two rifles I'd part with. I bought the 7.62x39 so I'd have cheap ammo to shoot. Of course I couldn't leave well enough alone and bought dies, brass, and bullets and started reloading it. Now I mostly shoot cast bullets out of them for cheap fun. I've had really good results with the lee C312-155-2R gas check bullet.

No kidding!

It's getting that way with all the Ruger 77 walnut/blue steel rifles. It's like they are the new old pre-64 Mdl 70s. o_O

I guess that's one way to look at it. I see them as different tools for different jobs and don't turn up my nose at any of them. Somehow I don't think a rifle that shoots sub-MOA qualifies as a "race to the bottom" sort of endeavor.
I fully agree with Craig. I currently have 3 rifles. A Savage Axis right-handed 243 that is my loan out rifle. A Savage Axis left-handed 308 woods rifle. And a Weatherby MarkV ultra lightweight 7 Rem Mag. Different tools for different tasks. But all will shoot MOA.
I want to add a Ruger American left-handed and a Christensen Arms or another Weatherby MarkV.

I like that they are using a new style of magazine. There are a lot of complaints about the magazines for the gen1 guns. I bought a NIB 243 that was a good shooter and gave it to my oldest son. He hasn't fired it yet. The things I don't like about the new gun is the fluted barrel but I could live with that. The threaded barrel doesn't matter one way or the other. I do not like oversized bolt knobs. The overall look of the new gun is just ugly with the hump backed stock. I'm sure its funtional and maybe very comfortable to shoot. Maybe the new guns will get me to order one of the 7.62x39 guns I have wanted for a while now before they are gone.

If I want a budget gun I will just get a Savage Axis. I never thought I would say anything nice about Savage rifles after the first one I owned 10+ years ago with its floppy junk stock. Now I have owned two of the Axis rifles and am very impressed with them. One was a 270 with the new plastic stock I sold to a young guy that just had to have it and since I gave my Ruger 243 to my son I wanted another 243 and found a NIB Axis with wood stock and Weaver scope on GB for a really good price. And now I have another plastic stocked Axis in 7-08 on my watch list.

I am glad Ruger is willing to try new designs and innovate. I still overall just prefer wood and blued steel and don't mind paying extra for it.
