I am looking at a Ruger American Ranch 5.56, bolt action with a 16" barrel. I have a problem with scopes and need open or iron sights. This rifle comes with a scope rail on top. Has anyone here made a successful open sight transition to this rifle. How???

I agree with Jackal...it would be cheaper to get a good red dot than to have iron fitted. I had them fitted to a Ruger MKII once and it ended up being more expensive than a H-1.

you could get one of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/223-308-MUZ...hash=item3d3071a1df:m:myHo_wmO-gZ4sJcNLs_JWYg made to match the contour of the end of the barrel, and about 1-1.5" long (i had that seller modify his set up for me, good guy), drill and tap it for any sight you want and then run a peep attached to the rear rail.

That's a pretty good idea in the sense that the gun could be converted to be with or without sights by the shooter rather quickly.

On the other hand the cost of machining that blank to a matching diameter then mounting a front sight makes me think of just paying a gunsmith to mount a new front sight directly to the barrel.

guy charged me 35 bucks for what he did for me and that required boring and turning down, and tapering, so i dont think hed charge too much for just making a stubby extension and contouring to match.

The job is easy enough, but not worth the expense IMHO. I can't imagine a problem with a scope that couldn't be overcome.

Some folks like irons. I'm one and I've always thought EVERY rifle should come with them. And I'd be willing to pay the price for them too.
Something about a bare on top rifle just irks the heck out of me. You can't just buy it and shoot it - you gotta buy some more stuff or it's useless as is.
I'm with blindhari!

I put a Nikon AR 3x 30mm tube on my American Ranch in 300 Blackout and it is quick with the large field of view of the fixed power. This may be your answer over adding iron sights.

If you're heart isn't set on the Ruger American you could get a mossberg MVP patrol in the same price range with "irons" (fiber optic?) already on the rifle. For a bit more coin, the GSR and cz 527's can be had with irons and are 5.56 rated as well.
If not set on a bolt rifle, those evil modern sporting rifles generally come so equipped.

Just did the 527 because I wanted irons....people said get the savage and spend the extra on good glass....I am so glad I made the choice I did....the savage seemed ok, but just cheap, and the ruger being a copy of the savage is even more cheap feeling to me.

A $300 rifle felt cheap compared to a $700 rifle? Imagine that!

How is the Ruger a copy of the Savage?

Read up on it and you will learn how the ruger is a copy of the savage down to the trigger.

I am not talking about wood vs plastic....or the feel of the action.....to ME the savage is the best buy for the buck out there.....but the ruger just felt....less developed....less refined....more clunky........something over the savage. I was this close to buying the savage....and there is a good chance I will in a different flavor....I think they make it in 22-250 and good chance an axis II will find its way home with me sometime or another....The stock was eh, and I never have seen their wood stock in person but there is a chance there....or boyds or something.

When I buy something like this...even a lower end rifle and that is where I put about all the sub $1000 offerings I still research the **** out of them....the working bits of the CZ and Savage just on feel are pretty close...the accu trigger is a pretty darn good trigger, I do like the set trigger on the CZ however...but that one bit to me did not justify the additional costs. The stock is really where Savage got let down....and having to spend the extra coin on a replacement I went well lets just get the CZ. Now the ruger (again felt to ME) was just cheap....more tinny....hard to put my finger on it....it is just missing something.

Hey fellows we seem to be digressing from the OP's problem into a squabble over a few rifles. Unfortunately short of gunsmith work that would provide adequate open sights but at at what I believe would be an unacceptable cost there needs to be some assistance and direction, also since the original post the OP has been absent, perhaps it is time he evaluated the suggestions and got us back on track with his needs.

I think it would be very costly to put sights onto it well. I would look at other options myself.

I know I was recently looking at a .308 rifle and wanted it threaded and with sights. Was not a ton of options there. Worth looking at Savage as has been mentioned.
