I shot my new Ruger American Rimfire today for the first time. I had an occasional failure to extract the spent cartridge case when I cycled the bolt. The ammo I was using was bulk Winchester from 2012.

It seemed to be worse with some magazines than others.

It seemed to be worse when I didn't cycle the bolt vigorously.

I didn't clean the gun before I took it to range.

The failure to extract happened about 1/20 shots.

What do you think the problem was?

No idea, but mine did the same with any ammo I tried. If I ejected the case vigorously it almost always ejected. But not if done slowly. And I was disappointed in the accuracy. My 10/22's were more accurate. I didn't keep mine long enough to fix the problem.

Check under the extractor. I had a piece of brass get under one of mine on a early American rimfire. Other then that there a pretty good rifle.

I have had 3 one with the 18'' such shot the worst but still good. The long barrel ones shot very good, all 3 liked mini mags. The early one would do a 1/2'' group at 100 yards the other just about 3/4''. The was about a inch.

My accuracy is extremely good. I have a low power fixed scope on it (2 or 2.5x), and I was shooting 1/2 inch groups at 50 yds with 7 yr old bulk Winchester Ammo.

Well; it certainly isn't an accuracy problem. First thing I would do is try different brands of ammo. It's a new gun that you didn't clean before taking to the range so maybe wait until its been shot and cleaned a few times and then see how it does. Second thing : possibly a break-in issue ? or Third : being unclean ?

My ruger american did the same thing. Mine is the ranch model is 762x39. I know there is a huge problem. But i called ruger and sent it back. They changed the extractor and it has been flawless ever since. Might want to give that a shot.

It seems more of a nuisance than a huge problem. I think before I send it back I will give it a cleaning and try some different ammo.

worth a shot. And its not that much of a nuisance. I had mine shipped, fixed and delivered in a week. Not that bad. Not sure of the 22lr, but the 762x39 had a redesigned extractor. And of course mine was the old style. Let use know how you make out after cleaning. write down the number that is on the extractor, you might need that number if you call/email Ruger

Both of the last two Rugers I have bought have had to be sent back for warranty work. They've handled it pretty well thus far, but having to ship rifles back to get right is definitely a nuisance. Hope yours gets straightened out.
