Hoping for some help. I cannot get the new factory ruger stock to accept my rotary mags. Mag conversion isn't an option per ruger. I called ruger and thwybare 'closed for unforeseen reasons '

My 308 American compact had a crack and I called Ruger who promptly sent me a new stock at no cost and quickly at that. The nice CS rep told me that this new stock would have an extra piece as they have made changes and revisions since I bought my rifle in 2014.

New stock comes in and my factory rotary box mag will not fit. No way no how.

I call ruger and the nice lady is obviously not too familiar with this rifle but she tries her best and even gets assistance from another lady. They decide I need their new rotary mag because the old version won't fit the new stock.

So the new mag comes in today and though different, it is definitely not going to fit either. I already asked about their mag conversion but that isn't an option I guess.

So Long story short. Has anyone had issues with getting a Ruger factory replacement stock to work in 308?

Post photos of your stock if possible, especially the cutout for the mags. The stocks are now all the same. But there is an insert that is different. Some use Accuracy International magazines, some the original mags, some use AR magazines, some use Mini 30 magazines. This way all the stocks are the same, but they use different inserts depending on the magazine.

The new 4 round staggered magazine should fit into any rifle with the older style rotary magazine. I'm guessing that you may have the insert intended for the Accuracy International magazines. It will take a few minutes, but will post some photos showing the difference.

Pics.

Insert to use Accuracy International mags. Available in 3, 5, and 10 round mags. Mag release at the rear near trigger guard.

Insert for standard magazines. Mag release at the front of the mag.

It should work equally well with the original rotary magazine on the left, or the newer stagger feed magazine on the right.

The same stock can even be used with another insert to take AR magazines if the rifle is chambered in 223 or 300 BO. Mag release on the side just like an AR. They also make an insert for 7.62X39 that uses Mini-30 magazines. I don't have a pic of that one.

The first CS rep mentioned this insert would accept AI mags.

The mag is too fat to fit into the insert and yet unable to latch onto anything without the insert. With no insert the mag just hits the bottom of the bolt. I also don't see anything for the mag to latch onto. I will try to add a pic of that as well.

Hopefully these pics help.

So, it looks like the insert you have is for the AI mags, which it would make sense that it wouldn't fit the rotary mags. But, it also looks like the magwell insert is missing the "tab" that holds the AI mags in (the empty pin slot is where it would pivot). So, even if you happened to have AI mags, it still wouldn't work for that reason. They need to either get you the correct insert for your mag if that's possible, or they'd need to get you an actually complete AI magwell. And if that's the case, IMO at least an AI mag as well for the trouble.

yeah that's the AI magwell, not the rotary well. The other guys called it.

I dont have my Rotary well anymore but THATS the part you need Ruger to send. Call them up and specifically ask for the short action, rotary magazine well.

I spoke with Ruger again today and oddly enough with the exact same lady as before.

After talking with her, and in turn her to her supervisor, and then an email where I had to send them pictures of my issue....one of their engineers has concluded that I need a different insert. Good call guys.

I am extremely surprised that it has taken 3 or 4 calls, emails, and lots of confusion on Rugers part. They are going to send an extra mag, were polite, and in the end (presumably) were able to fix the problem so all's well that ends well.

Any more, it really doesn't surprise me. I've come to realize that decent amount of the people that work for gun companies, even in the customer service realm, aren't really "gun people" if that makes sense. Honestly, that's part of the reason I really want to get in at Springfield Armory (just an hour down the road from me), I feel like manufacturers could use a few more gun guys in the fold especially in customer service. :D
