Had a range session the other day with my first AR-15 ever. Being too old to actually see or use iron sights I also picked up a Vortex Strikefire 2 red/green dot sight. I cleaned and lubed the rifle when I got home and off to the range a few days later. I did try to bore sight the rifle at home to set the optics by eye but felt I needed a huge first target to fire at in case I was way off, hence the 23"x35" snowman, which if fact gave me plenty of different areas to shoot at.
I don't do any "Break-in Procedure" so it was shoot once to make sure I was on the paper and from there 3 shots, adjust optics, 3 shots adjust, etc. Moving on to my regular bullseye target things started to come together and I started firing 5 shot groups. Ammo was IMI M193.
One observation I made was the green dot seemed to be easier on the eyes and contrasted nicely with the target. It wasn't until nearly the end of the session that I remembered I could adjust the intensity of the dot,,, duh. As can be seen in the pic below, it made a huge difference.
Everything was shot at 50 yds with the front of the rifle resting on my range bag. It took a while to get the optics dialed in and while I'm not "on" the bullseye yet, we're getting close. Unfortunately time and ammo was running out as the wife wanted to get some range time in too.
The last group shot is the final outcome that makes me think I got a winner of a setup. Perhaps it was blind beginners luck that it grouped less than 1" but I ran out of time and ammo to follow up anymore.
We'll see on our next date if Mary Ann (over Ginger every time) and I continue a beautiful friendship.
