custom ruger gsr

I'm getting a stainless 18" Ruger Gunsite Scout. I plan on removing the rail conventionally mounting a scope (prostaff 2.5-10×40) via ruger rings. I'm still wanting back up sights. I don't want a forward mounted optic and I don't was an xs sight rail. I want to mount an express rear sight, or setting similar, on one of the sets of holes left behind from the rail. Anybody know the screw pattern? Distance from each hole? I can make a sight if need be, but if an aftermarket part will work I would go that route.

I don't know the answer to your question. But I have seriously considered buying the same rifle and taking a similar path. If I ever do this I'd go one of 2 different ways.

#1. I'd zero the peep sight that comes with the rifle before mounting the optics, take it off and carry it in my pack when hunting. I always keep a multi-tool in my gear and the scope could come off and the peep replaced in under 1 minute.



#2 Realistically the most reasonable plan is to just use a quality scope and forget irons. In 40+ years of hunting I've never had a quality scope let me down. I have had iron sights fail a few times.

Not saying your plan is a bad choice, just not worth the trouble to me.
 
I gotta say it again: the GSR is the worlds most expensive $300 bolt gun. There is nothing there to justify the very high prices.

I have one. It is light and kinda fast and cool. I use irons. A magazine bolt gun (308) is nice. But the bolt is super sloppy - wobbles all over the place.

Not too far removed from a Rem LTR (except for magazine) but I bet those cost a bunch now, too.

I have never had a scope fail either. I just simply like the looks of irons and I also like to take my scope off occasionally to shoot with irons. I don't like the look of the xs rail, so that's why I wanted a rear sight in the traditional position on the barrel.

Dave p if you could could you measure from the first screw to the second, third, and forth on the forward rail of your gsr? Start with the screw closest to the action.
 
I too went with the XS rail and quick release rings. Best of both worlds. I am not too sure on how to mount with factory rings and still use the sights.

It can be done using the front two holes of the Ruger forward rail in the barrel.

What you have to do is determine if you want a rear sight like what I have or have a custom fit NECG that would be stronger.

This is a Marbles #30 base for a 0.875" diameter barrel and a buckhorn sight mounted to it. The thing is, the adjustable slider notches are weak, so you have to stake the elevation slider once you sight it in. Use tape to keep it in place until you know where you want it.

By the way, I filed back the nose of the base to suit the barrel contour and cold blued it.

EDIT: the Ruger holes in the barrel take 6-40 screws. The Marbles comes with some other pitch that will not work. I had a hard time sourcing 6-40 Allen screws. Even then you have to size the length yourself if you can't find exactly what you need.

The hole spacing for the front two or rear two holes on the GSR barrel is approximately 0.65" center to center.

Here ya go!

Note that the GSR comes with #4 and #5 scope mount rings. I bought a #3 and use it with the #4 that came with the gun to lower the scopes seen in the photos below.

I like New England custom guns Irons.. I have the optional flip up big dot up front as well..

Ruger Gunsite Scout in 308 converted to a 358 Win with Shillen Match-Grade barrel. New England custom guns Irons with optional flip up big dot up front, QR mounts for my Zeiss Terra scope for quick access to Irons.

Gameover, I love the idea of stepping it up a notch with the caliber conversion. I have been contemplating the same thing but using a .338 federal barrel.
 
Just be sure of the thread pitch. Most #6's on firearms are 6-48.

A $300 bolt gun??? This ain't 1980. Very high prices? You do realize that they're a whopping $130 more than a standard 77 Hawkeye with no sights, right? Not a bad upcharge to get GOOD iron sights, adjustable LOP, a threaded muzzle and detachable magazines.

I know but I'm warning that they use both. I just ran into this on an American rimfire .17HMR with the front sight screw. It's a 6-40 but the scope base screws are 6-48. Realized this when I tried to use a scope base plug screw for the front sight and noticed the thread pitch was a little coarser.

That's interesting. The GSR's holes on the barrel are definitely 6-40.

I wonder why Ruger went with 6-48 on the receiver of the American? That's not a bad thing, maybe the question should be why does Ruger use 6-40 at all?
 
Don't know. I never heard of 6-40's being used on firearms until now. Only 6-48's. I know the scope base screws of both the 10/22 and MK-series are 6-48. As are most guns. Some use slightly beefier 8-40's. Looking at Brownells, looks like 6-40 plug screws are a lot more expensive than 6-48's. Probably not in common use.
 
LIR scope and not happy

My RSR was set up with LIR scope and I did not take a shot at white tail deer this year [ largest buck I ever saw ] due to not having the sight picture that I really NEEDED to take the ethical shot I will take.

I have a Nightforce 2.5 X 10 that I plan on mounting on the RSR.

I would prefer to use a full length rail to do the mount,that will allow me BUS of one form or another.

I do agree that I have NEVER had a scope fail ------ yet,so I still want a back up sight [ might be a display and not iron ].

I used the Ruger American Compact for the rest of my hunt,it was SO much lighter and I did like that.

But the RSR has a feel that gives me confidence AND even with the LIR it was able to do well from the bench out to 200 yards.
