Hi All!! I am new here and have a few questions perhaps someone here can answer:

I recently (today) purchased a Ruger Single Six SS 6 1/2" barrel. It's a used gun but it has Sambar (?) Grips. I went on Rugers website and searched the serial number. It was manufactured sometime in 1990. Anyway I paid $450 for it. Is that a good deal? and also what is up with the grips? The gun dealer kept mentioning them so do they add value or is it just him trying to sell me the gun? In any case I am absolutley satisfied with the gun.

Also I purchased a H&R 22 Sportsman. It is a top-break design. The guy told me they aren't made anymore (his main selling point) also the gun is in good shape, it shoots well and is accurate from 25yds. I'm mainly seeking info about this particular model.

It's probably fairly obvious that I am new to the world of hand guns. What I mean is, I have fired them but I dont know much about them.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

If they are real Sambar grips then it certainly does add to the value. A nice pair of real stag grips can run in the $200 to $300 dollar range.

They are named after the Sambar deer from India where the material comes from.

The H&R Sportsman Model 990 is a fine .22 revolver. I can’t think of any other plinker I have more fun with. You made a wise decision in getting that one.

Thanks! The gun I bought didn't come with a box or anything and so help me I can't find a model number on it. It has H&R "Sportsman" double action on the barrell and I assume a serial number on the butt of the gun. Oh yes on the oppiste side it says 22 long rifle ctg.
It sounds like you know what you're talking about though so I guess this one is a model 990

REB thanks for the comments. He (the dealer) kept saying those grips are hard to get etc. And I have seen the "fake" plastic ones on other guns. They look authentic to me.

There's Sanbar stag ($250 from ajax grips last I looked) and fake stag and then there's American elk (lesser quality to Sanbar). I gave 70 bucks for a set of Sanbars for a blackhawk and thought I was splurging. Shoulda got four or five sets, I guess, LOL! I love stag grips and Sanbar are the best quality and, of course, the most expensive. You can go to www.ajaxgrips.com to check the latest price on 'em. That's where I got mine.

I've shot the old H&Rs and the Rugers. I love Ruger single actions and, of course, own a few, but don't have a single six! I should pick up one or a bearcat. Always thought the bearcat was neat. However, I do have a Mk2. The old H&Rs were budget guns, but for plinking, they worked rather well considering the price. I sorta miss 'em on the market. Lots of folks broke into handgun shooting with a H&R sportsman and many have ridden in tackle boxes and glove compartments to be there when you felt like shooting a few tin cans. :D They're not worth a whole lot, however. I'd think a hundred bucks would pick up a nice one.

$400 is a might high for the Ruger except for the grips. If they're Sanbar, you could sell 'em and get over half your money back on the gun. :D I'd keep 'em, though.
