I just found the Ruger 380 at the Bass Pro Shop. $299 plus tax.

I will report back after I get to the range in the next couple of days. I have to say, it is smaller and lighter than I thought. Bet it kicks more also.

Any suggestions on the best ammo would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You in advance.

For plinking(although not really for target shooting) i use cheap Fiochi FMJ

For hollow points i've used Corbon the regular and Gold Dots flawlessly

I hear many say Golden Sabers and Corbon DPX are good

Best .380 for SD? Bet you won't get too many responses to that question.

I have one mag of CorBon DPX, one mag of Speer Gold Dot, and the mag that is actually in the pistol is filled with Golden Sabre 102gr (heaviest JHP available AFAIK). Which one is "best"? Hell, I don't know, but they're all pretty damned good.

If I could afford to shoot a lot of the DPX, that would be my first choice, based on how well they perform in other calibers.

The new Hornady Critical Defense round looks promising as well (good write-up by Stephen Camp recently).

Some folks like the Buffalo Bore lead rounds; I have no experience with them, but Buffalo Bore makes some very good ammo.

Short answer--you have some homework to do :)

Our Bass Pro had one left tin stock today. I almost bought it just because they have been hard to find. I have a little Kahr PM9, so I couldn't justify buying the Ruger, even though it is a little smaller.......

The Remington Golden Saber 102 grain has been shown to expand great and penetrate enough.

I use

Magtech ball for practice. For carry I haven't made my final decision but right now I am carrying the Fiocchi XTP round. Fiocchi loads this round with the same bullet as Hornady TAP. The TAP round is 50 FPS seconds faster and externaly identical to Fiocchi round. So, at $21/50 for the Fiocchi and $18/20 for the Hornady you could practice with the Fiocchi and carry TAP. If your gun hangs up with any of your ammo at first, as mine did, just keep shooting it. AT my first range session the first 2 mags of Fiocchi I put through it had about four stove pipes. Even the ball ammo hung up and need a tap on the slide to get it to return to battery. After 300 rounds the gun had worn in enough that even with the Fiocchi it would only hang up slightly and return to battery on its own or with a tap to the back of the slide. I finally got to the range yestrday after cleaning it and polishing the feed ramp slightly. It worked flawlessly with everything I put through it. The sights though small are well regulated and this thing is pretty accurate. If you havent got a pocket holster yet try the Desantis Nemasis. This thing rides in my pocket constantly even when I am wearing my Glock.

Magtech ball for practice, Corbon for carry. Largely because the dealer has that in stock. I suggest you keep reading up and also looking on the shelves. I expect more new ammo's to come out in the next two years because of market demand.

Pocket carry with the Nemesis is ok with loose fit pants. I'm trying an inexpensive IWB and finding during winter it conceals even better under sweaters and vests.

When it comes right down to it, any ammo will probably be less important than the range of the encounter and my ability to actually draw. Reading Mas Ayoob and drawing on MOS training, I see too many of us get wrapped around the technics of guns and ammo, and not application.
