Hi everyone, first post here. :)

My brother recently purchased an LCP and the first thing I noticed when handling it is that when a magazine is inserted it "catches" about halfway up and the magazine release must be depressed for the mag to be fully inserted. I checked out another LCP at a local shop and found that it has the same problem but to a lesser extent.
I tried the search function and found that some people have had problems with magazines coming loose but no one really seems to have the problem that my bro does. My brother is going to contact Ruger to get the problem rectified but I am curious to know if anyone else has had this problem with the LCP or P3AT.
(For reference his gun is post recall and the problem occurs with all three mags that he owns).

Thanks for your help!

It's totally normal. The magazine isn't "sticking" as you describe. A lot of handguns are designed that way (1911 comes to mind). You put the magazine in, it usually comes to a stop about half way, then you give it a "pop" with the heel of your hand to fully seat it.

Everything is fine. Go shoot it:)

*edit* Oops, forgot to mention that my LCP does the exact same thing and it is fine.

Should I really trust the advice of a guy that has six hundred and sixty six posts? ...

I will have to try a little more force when inserting the magazine but it does seem like depressing the mag release is the only way that it will fully seat. I will check back in after giving it a try, thanks.

Definitely. I'd say that number better reflects the number of handguns I've owned (and probably sold) in the past 3 years! LOL!

I promise you it is definitely supposed to be that way. You don't have to hold the mag release down to seat the magazine. Just pop it in there!

That depends on whether it actually won't go in without pressing the mag release, or if it's just meeting some resistance. If the latter, perfectly normal. If the former, definitely not normal.

My LCP mags seat with thumb pressure... no need to whack them at all.

I have some friends with LCP's and am told none of them had this problem UNTIL they went back for the latest recall. I think Ruger is swapping out the magazine catch... why it binds now is beyond me.

IMHO, you shouldn't have to depress the magazine catch to load a magazine... especially on a gun designed for carry.

Also, check this site out: http://www.elsiepeaforum.com/ - dedicated to the "Elsie Pea".

actually it is catching just when it reached the magazine catch, nothing inside the mag well is doing it. It has to ride past the mag catch, you can either slam it in and possably damage the catch in time or just touch themag release button a bit and it will go right in. The lcp is not a race gun, IMO I see no need to slam magazines. They will pop out every time with just a touch of the button. What this fella is experiencing is normal.

Just shoot it like u stole it.

Good grief man! Anything you read on here should be taken as an opinion just as anywhere else you would ask it including a gun store. I would think the number posts here would not neceesarily be the indicator of how much knowledge one has. It is sometimes hard to know who you are listening to unless the person filled out their profile information.

Hopefully you will find the answer to your magazine question. I have been lurking in the LCP related questions for a few weeks trying to decide if I want one. It just seems that one problem after another is fixed and then another crops up. Somehow I still like the little LCP if they ever get it worked out.

mine is exactly the same way. i know mine is post recall i did hear something about the new catch, but the gun functions properly. better for it to stick than fall out.

after looking over the lcp once again and the magazine issue. i noticed because the handle is soo thin, when loading the magazine, the lead bullet on the magazine actually makes contact with the magazine catch. if you will notice the magazine catch will depress when loading the magazine when your lead bullet touches the magazine catch. I am using fmj so maybe thats whats causing the issue, but i think it is normal.

+1

Look at it as a safety feature.

If the mag release got pressed in your pocket, the mag would fall out on the ground when you pulled it out if not for mag catch tension keeping it in there.

I know nothing about the LPC mag catch, but the Kel-Tec they copied uses a plastic catch.
Slamming it in without holding down the button will rather quickly shave plastic off the mag catch, until it won't hold mags in the gun anymore.

Like the guy said, it is not a race gun!
And it shouldn't be treated as one by slamming mags in like it was one.

Thanks Dravur, as you had guessed I was making reference to "the number of the beast", hence the devil smiley.

Anyway I got a chance to look at it again and slamming the mag home is definitely not an option unless I want to break something in there. I guess if that's the way it has to be then it is what it is. I would just hate to be fumbling with a magazine release if God forbid the need to reload arose in a defensive situation.
