What do you guys think of this rifle in .223? I have an opportunity to pick up one at a very good price pre-owned but unfired. It's already set up with a nice Nikon scope and is basically ready to go. I don't have much experience with the .223 round out of a bolt action gun like this. I would like to use it for target shooting primarily and I'm thinking .223 is a reasonably priced round. What should I consider before I buy this gun?

Trigger will need some attention and barrel should be bedded or floated to maximize accuracy.
Ruger is a top notch bolt rifle for those of us more into utility than competition.
I've not found one yet that wasn't adequate with a little effort.

I've got a Ruger K77 in 22 magnum. Pretty expensive, but top notch. The trigger was fine on mine.

Rugers are one of my top picks in a standard hunting rifle. They are "accurate enough" for most hunting purposes and their rugged dependability gives them an edge over most other rifles that may be slightly more accurate.

The Target model will already have a little more attention to the trigger and bedding compared to a standard hunting rifle and will likely be among the most accurate out of the box Ruger you can buy.

But if absolute accuracy is your goal it is doubtful a Ruger will be quite as accurate as a similar rifle made by Remington Savage or many others. Not to say it will be inaccurate, it will still probably be better than most people can shoot.

If I liked it, and if the price is right I'd buy it.

I like Ruger 77 actions but they can be heart breakers as far as accuracy is concerned. I've had some that shot well and others that shot terrible and everything in between. There has been more variation in the accuracy levels of the Rugers I've owned than in any other bolt action brand by far. Now, every time I see one that I'm tempted to buy I can't help but think "it must be a stinker accuracy-wise and that's why it's for sale." Are you really sure it's unfired?
