im in the same boat. & if you cnt beat them /you better join them. So I did.
& I just filed away on a 30 cal carbine peep sight & fitted it to my RANCH. now waiting on a Accu strut & a flash hider to come in the mail. & we will give this 197 series another try.
if i Knew then what i know now . i would have put the barrel in a vise,Given it a good SMACK & sent it back BENT!!!
Just kidding.
kinda looking forward to the experiment & seeing if this strut works as good as advertised

Notoriously fun and inaccurate. I had a buddy who sent his to a specialist to accurize it. I warned him the barrel and action don't warrant it. He got it back. He shot it. He sold it for a fraction of the original cost, forget the accurizing which was just as much. LOL

Don't expect super accuracy from a FMJ bullet. That is all I can say.

I had to sell my NIB unfired factory folder Mni-14 when I moved to New Jersey.
Bummer
When I got here I bought a New Jersey legal Mini-30
I sold it because it gave me 6 inch groups with Winchester or American Eagle ammo
Now I have a New Jersey legal Bushmaster with a fixed stock
Go figure

MachIVshooter, dropping in a smaller gas port bushing helps (older mini-14's were notoriously overgassed, resulting in huge barrel bending moments from the cantilevered gas block), adding some sort of muzzle weight or harmonic damper helps (even just adding a flash suppressor, though the accu-strut and such can help more), and bedding the stock to ensure a tight fit fore and aft helps. That's the typical accuracy regimen recommended on the mini-14 forums, without getting into a new barrel, trigger pack, etc.

MachIV;
I didn't say they didn't do anything to the action but that there's little point, and they did work on the trigger too. But if you're arguing that one has to replace the barrel (which I don't disagree is inadequate after the first shot) and the action significantly, then, no-one should be buying a Mini-Anything...

Yes, I'll keep my Mini-14 Bicentennial and F30GB, but I don't bother shooting 'em.

I'm content with 6" paper plate accuracy out of my Mini at 100 yds. Years ago when I bought it, I had no idea what they shot like as there were no internet forums that I was aware of and I wouldn't have had access to them anyway. I observed how I personally shot and was not pleased overall at first. Then after thinking about what I actually want the rifle for.... it does just fine. That is the where I am now. Everyone wants a sub MOA rifle, but few actually need one. Been thinking about getting a CZ in 223 and if it does not do 1-MOA, I will be very displeased. Again.... intended purpose....

Enjoy the rifle. Just don't expect too much out of it.

I guess that depends on what you want. For $1,500, I'll go AR and be able to get a pretty decent scope within that budget. But for someone who wants a precision mini, $700 for a new rifle and $800 to have ASI work it will give you a sub-MOA (Guaranteed) rifle. They offer several barrel profiles and lengths, and will convert chambering, included in that price. I was severely tempted to have them turn mine into a deadly accurate .17 rem. auto, but 1) I have concerns about the .17 rem. in an auto, with that long and very slender neck being stressed as it goes up the feed ramp and 2) decided I liked my mini better as an AC-556 wanna-be:

It's minute of coyote to 300 yards, so that's good enough. I opted for a bolt rifle in .17 (and a .220) to snuff out praire rats. That, and my Armalite M-15 carbine proved a good 1.3 MOA compact auto.
