Ruger Mk II replacement stocks....

Am looking at Volquartsen (sp) or Hogue, with thumb rest. Anyone out there use these on their Mk II? Pros, cons, any thoughts, opinions? My pistol is the 5.5 inch bull barrel stainless model.

I got a pair of the Ruger factory lanimated thumbrest---like on the Competition model---and put them on my 6 7/8's tapered Target model.

Got them from Midway for like $36 a year or two ago---also got a set of the Hogue stainless hex screws to hold them on.

No problems here and looks a lot better than the cheapie factory plastic ones.

I have the Volq grips for the MKII as well as the factory wood laminates and some Pachmayers.

The Volq grips are ideal for single handed shooting. I found them very comfortable and grippy. The thumbrest does get in the way if you try to shoot with both hands. I did have to trim a little off the bottom of the grip so the magazines would fit. If you're looking for a relatively inexpensive target type grip, I don't think you'd go wrong with the Volthane grips.

The factory wood laminates are ok, I didn't find them as grippy.

The Pachmayers are good if you're looking for standard rubber grips. They wrap around to the back of the pistol grip. It even comes with an insert to cover the backstrap. The rubber offers good grip but is a bit harder than the rubber used on Hogue grips.

I'm with yzguy. My slabside came with the laminated thumbrest grips and I really don't like them very much. The Hogue finger grooves are alot more comfy for me.

I use the Volq grips and shoot with two hands. It's easy to do. I like them much better than the stock grips.

Thanks for all the feedback; I'm gonna go with the Volq grips for now. Am working my way ( slowly ) into one handed shooting; those should work! Herrett's and Fung are BEAUTIFUL, just too expensive at the moment.

I have both Volquartsen and Hogue grips. The Hogue grip feels great and really improves the feel of the gun. I use the Volquartsen grip for target and I do well with it. Others have described it as holding a coffee mug. That's about right...it's big. but if you work with it you can developer a very good, repeatable grip which helps scores.

If I wasn't shooting for points I'd stick with the Hogue. Like your Mark II, it's a purchase you just can't go wrong with.

I use the Volquartsen grip for bulls eye shooting and it fit my hand very well. I tried the laminated Ruger grips, and do like their appearance, but for bulls eye the Volquartsen is much better.

i replaced the factory grips ith houge after gunscrubber melted my factory grips :banghead:. I couldn't be happier. I'm left handed, so a lot of the fancy thumbrest grips don't work well when me and my dad/friends go shooting.

I have the Hogue black rubber, finger groove, thumbrest grips. Although some consider them to be sacriledge, I love the way they feel. Much steadier to my hand. I don't think you can go wrong with them if you like the way you feel...especially for <$30.
