Ruger MK3 Magazine stuck in backwards

A friend of mine just purchased a new Ruger MK3 pistol. Tonight while at the shooting range I managed to put the magazine in backwards and now we cannot get it out.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to get it out? It is stuck pretty much all the way in and we can move it about a quarter of an inch up and down.

We tried pulling on it at the range with limited tools. We couldn't get it to budge and we were worried about breaking something.

I don't think we at the point where selling it a viable option yet.

Push and hold the mag release button, then pull it out?

We held down the release button while pulling down on the magazine without any luck.

This just happened to a friend of mine, with his brand new fully suppressed mk3 (custom built). Think it was the first or second time he brought it to the range, and some guy asked to try it. The inserted the mag backwards and probalby thought it was just a tight fit because he then tried to slam it in...:banghead:

My friend dismantled the gun as best he could, and managed to pluck the shots out from the top. After an hour or so trying with pliers and a hammer he gave up and went to a local gunstore. They got the mag free, but somwhere the mag-well got a permanent damage, so now the empty mags dont fall free on their own when released, they have to be pulled out.

Lessons learned: See a gunsmith/gunstore and get it fixed. Inspect the well and try to polish out any irregularities caused by the jam. And last but not least, be careful who you lend your guns to...

BTW: the fully suppressd mk3 is a joy to shoot and gives the gun much better balance

If the MKIII hasn't had the mag safety removed the mags won't drop free. (Even when they are inserted properly ) You need to pry the mag out until the linkage doesn't bear on the mag and then it will drop. The mag safety linkage side loads the mag in the magwell and adds too much friction.

If you can move the mag... Disassemble the pistol

If the mag will move, then it's not jammed. It's catching on something. I suspect that it's catching on the mag release. I don't know if you can remove that with the mag in the way or not, but worth a look. Look for any other component in the well that it's catching on. Maybe it's just a grip screw that wouldn't normally catch if the magazine was inserted by a 'non idiot'. If you can get the mag down enough to disassemble the mag.. pull the pin/spring/plunger, the plunger button might be what's catching.

Spoken the way I see it. I've been idiot for a moment.. Been called one, once or twice. Learned from those situations. Try not to repeat myself.

But come on.. Inserting a magazine in a gun is not rocket science, and is something that a shooter should be paying attention to.

I'm sure he's learned his lesson.

IMHO, if the mag will fit in the grip backwards the pistol suffers from a design flaw.

I own 7 Rugers, and I will most likely buy more... but not a MkIII
