I am considering a .22 autoloader but have a need to use
.22 shorts for prairie dogs in a community with houses closer than the 300 yard minimum required under state law for discharging a firearm.

Will the Ruger cycle .22 shorts? Or, does anyone know of a .22LR that is loaded with a reduced charge to reduce noise by still cycles the autoloader?

Alternatively, does anyone know of noise suppression techniques for this gun that are within the bounds of the NFA?.

Two things:

1. Find out a way to not violate your state (or local) statute that requires houses be further than 300 yards away before discharging a firearm. There should be some way to get around this via special licensing or a waiver, either by talking to your local sheriff or DA, or something.

2. Suck it up, pay the $200, fill out the forms, and get a suppressor.

Failing to accomplish #1, just use a high powered air rifle. Some of them will break supersonic velocities and should take care of a prairie dog at short distances.

CCI CB longs are the ticket for really low noise in rifles. Unfortunately, in a pistol the noise level is still up there but significantly less than stardard velocity ammo. CB ammo won't feed from the magazine [only LR ammo feeds] so it's single shot only. Most short ammo is high velocity and thus noisy. The only advantage of shorts is added capacity in rifles with tubular magazines. Stay away from Remington ammo with your MKIII; reportedly is it junk.... http://www.guntalk-online.com/service.html
If your shooting 35-50 yds I'd recommend a .22 rifle with CB ammo or better yet a .177 pellet rifle such as a Gamo.
