my question is if i already own the blackhawk 357, can i buy a 9mm cylinder for my gun or is there certain mods that need to be done to the gun. sorry for the question if its already been answered but i haven't be able to pin down the answers i'm looking for.

Send it to Ruger and tell them what you want, they'll take care of you. It will cost you but they can do it.

Measure your current cylinder, and find a 9mm cylinder that is the same length or longer. Many will "drop in" without fitting, while others will need to be tweaked a bit. It is not a particularly difficult job, but if you are not 100% sure of how to check the gap, and alignment, send it to Ruger, or a gunsmith.

any new cylinder will have to be timed. this involves altering all six notches on the back of the cylinder so each chamber will line up perfectly with the barrel when cocking the hammer.

this is difficult and time consuming. best left to a pistolsmith or the factory.

just installing an extra cylinder on the revolver and calling it good, is dangerous.

I could be wrong, but I do not believe Ruger will fit a 9mm cylinder to a .357 unless the guns frame is marked as a 9mm/.357 convertible to start with.

Replacement cylinder yes.
Conversion cylinder no.

I seem to recall that the barrel bore on the convertable is also slightly smaller at .356 to provide a compromise bore size of the 9mm bullets being slightly loose and the .38Spl and .357Mag bullets being slightly tight.

Do a search on this forum for "ruger convertable". I seem to recall a year or more back where a couple of threads were done discussing the accuracy of the 9 vs .357 size bullets from the Convertable. As I recall the 9's didn't tend to group as well. Or maybe more care was needed to find which bullets worked best with the 9 cylinder. I don't quite recall. But there are threads about this.

In any event if you would like this done it seems like the best folks to ask would be found at Ruger. Send 'em an email.
