For some reason the Ruger No. 1 has caught my eye. I need an "accurate" (out to 150 yards) .223 for groundhog hunting. Have owned several bolt action and auto loaders, but how does the No. 1 compare in that specific caliber?

just seems like a WHOLE LOTTA MONEY ($1100) for a single shot groundhog gun to me. Don't get me wrong, a Ruger 1 is a gorgeous rifle(don't personally know how it shoots) but I'm sure there are plenty of 223 types that are MUCH less expensive and will do the job with enough precision. One being the H&R Handi-Rifle with scope for a MSRP of $270. just my $.02 If money is not a concern go for it!

Best money ever spent. . .

Buy one, had a #1 Varminter in 220 Swift, and it stacked bullets in the same hole all day long, and with accuracy like that, who needs a second shot????

You get what you pay for. I have a Handi-Rifle in .223 that is total junk: Oh, it shoots OK but has a huge, out of round chamber that ruins cases in a hurry. That gun is going away soon.

I learned to like falling blocks when I borrowed a friend's Sharps replica.

That said, assuming you have your trajectory down to an exact science, I think it would be far more amusing to shoot groundhogs with a .45-70. Even at 150 yards, though, you really will need to know your trajectory.

I've owned a number of Ruger number ones and never had one that would shoot as well as I would have wished. Some of the varmint rifles are OK. A High Wall or Low Wall will generally give better accuracy if you like drop blocks.

Call Marlin/H&R and have them send you a call tag to have it fixed, they do have great customer service and will fix it right. While it is there ask them to check the trigger and they will do a decent action job on it for free.

The point blank range on a .223 is about 235 yards. That is, about one inch high at 100 yards will get you no more than 1.5 inches low at 235 yards.

I had a Ruger #3 in .223 and it was a sweetheart of a shooter. I could consistently nail a 4 inch square plate at 225 yards off hand (using a tree to steady) with the rifle.

I have a Ruger #1 in .243 and it is an exceptional rifle.

You can zap varmints out to 235 yards with a .223 like a laser beam. Much past that and you will have to become familiar with the trajectory. Or you can use the old watch where the bullet hits the dirt method and adjust your aim from there.

You will not loose any money on a #1 and you don't have to pay a grand either. A little shopping and you can turn one up for $550 to $650. They are not rare!

If you dont want it and want to give it away ill take it...
I love my Handi 223... And it will 1/2" or better at 150 easily... Very good for a 200 dollar rifle... I put a Simmons master 6-18X40 on it and have recently been shooting 3/4 groups at 200yds.... Something i have never been able to do before... Course h scope helped me alot but the gun can only do the best it will do.. If this is the best then i am darn well happy with it...

i agree, 1100 bucks is a LOT of money to plink ground hogs! WOW! i also have a 223 handi rifle, bull barrel, it is VERY ACCURATE for having the stock trigger. if you buy one of these, get a trigger job done on it BEFORE you bring it home! you will be much happier. i can still plug slightly less than 1" groups @ 100 yards, but i am concentrating as much on that trigger as i am on holding target! when i am actually hunting, i miss way to much, again, the trigger.

I have a No.1V in .223 and is a wonderful rifle. I had no idea it was worth that kind of money. They are beautiful rifles. Mine shoots better than I can shoot it. As for the H&R in the .223 (Handy-rifle), this too is a great shooter and I have a total of about 300 into mine and is a great shooter not much to look at but does the job very well.

You can't go wrong with the ruger.
