I have wanted a No. 1 since the first day I saw them. I want one! I would like to see some pics of any of yours along with info on what caliber, scope you use, etc.

My next question is how the heck did you decide on a caliber? That is my main reason for not already having one. I live in MO, so the biggest game we have is whitetail deer. So, sometimes I think I should get one in a deer caliber, sometimes I think varmint caliber, and sometimes I think I should get it in something in the middle that would be fairly inexpensive to shoot, so I can shoot a lot for cheap ie. .223 Rem.

Thanks for any contributions. Good shootin'!

I am a bit of a recoil junkie and love the 45-70, which I put thru a BFR. Always fancied tho going ''right up there'' with the round and so some months back got a #1 - in of course 45-70!!

Love the thing, tho with my fairly hot loads is somewhat brutal with recoil! Something very satisfying however with what almost feels like a light weight buffalo rifle!! I shove a 405 ahead of 52 grains 3031 which is almost a compressed charge and a bit below max - once that powder finished I'll switch to RL7 top load. I already use RL7 with a lighter but still decidedly warm load for the BFR.

To chose a cal for a #1 is hard because I can think of many I'd like but - if you reload, then 45-70 sure makes for grins!!

I don't have any pics of mine, but I am opinionated.:D

A couple years ago my gf bought me a Ruger #1 RSI (Mannlicher stock carbine) in .30-06 for Christmas. I had looked at it earlier in the year and decided it would be a good boat gun since most hunting off the road system is done by boat. I had also decided on the .30-06 because it is the do all caliber even here in Alaska.
I don't use a scope for general hunting since the irons serve me well enough and I never had to shoot big game much over 100 yrds. I use scopes more for specialized applications rather than general hunting.
I shoot only two loads out of it, both Federal. For black bear, sheep, caribou, and similar sized critters, I use the Federal Game-Shok loads w/ 150 gr Speer Grand Slams. For meese and brown bears, I use Federal Vital-Shok High Energy w/ 180 gr Nosler Partitions. It keeps the sight settings simple and I can do anything that needs doing with it.
It shoots like a laser, carries easily and comes up quickly in thick brush and timber. I've also become proficient at reloading quickly. I took a moose with it year before last...........skunked this year.
I would like another #1. Although I'm not a fan of belted magnums, I hunted brown bear this year with a Win. M-70 in .375 H&H and started thinking that maybe a #1 in this caliber might not be such a bad idea. However, it's going to have to wait since I've given priority to a .338-06 AI rifle build project.
If you get the #1 you won't be sorry. I suggest you decide what you are going to use it for and base your caliber selction on that.

Thanks guys. Nice rifle P95Carry! Sometimes I think .30-06 because it is the universal American caliber. But, then again, sometimes I think .223 because it is cheap to shoot and would serve well on coyotes, etc.

Basically, I just need to get whatever caliber I decide on, then start reloading. It would be a great reason to get in to realoading. :D Thanks thus far, guys!

If you think a number1 in 45-70 kicks, try a number 3, ha ha. I usually shoot real light loads from my #3 since I got my Marlin 45-70 lever gun. I have a #1 in 30-06, and a #3 in .223, love them all.

If you ask me, Ruger excells aethetically in the looks department in their long arms. The Ruger #1 is no exception. I've never liked the looks of their handguns, but that #1 sure is purdy.

I haven't shot one, but I certainly wouldn't turn down the opportunity to. If it shoots as nice as it looks, count me in for a new addition to my short list.

i have a #1 in 7mm rem mag, with a leupold 3x9, i love it, seems like the more you shoot it the better it gets

Adaman - one small final caveat. Regarding as I do, the #1 as a super strong rifle - I'd not reckon myself to ''waste'' the gun on std cals like 30-06 or .223 etc - there are so many other platforms for those - and good ones too.

I guess I am saying here - treat yourself to something that is truly ''up there'' in cal and power - then you can enjoy those with a gun well able to take them.:)

My #1 Tropical is in 375 H&H. No recoil pad makes for about 6-7 shots before my performance starts to deteriorate. Super smooth action and nice, crisp trigger too.

I have a #1 in .243 and a #3 in .223. They are great rifles.

I have owned them in several other calibers.

Not to hijack things but the last single shot rifle I bought was a TC Encore with a .204 barrel on it. Then I got a .450 Marlin Barrel for Elk. The Encore is very strong and you get to change barrels to what ever suits you.

But the Ruger is a very nice looking rifle.

No.1

No photos of mine either, but I enjoy a 458 win. I only bought it over the 45-70 because it had the heavy barrel though. Most of my reloads are 45-70 to
45-90 level cast bullets with IMR 4759. I will send some full force pills down range now and then just to check my retinas. 'Course the 458 Lott available now is a whole 'nother story recoil wise  ...

Mine currently wears a 4x Redfield but I have a 2X7 Nikon in the safe just itching to be put in its place. It also needs a "real" recoil pad one of these days for the heavy loads.

The Ruger No.1 is truly a beautiful rifle. I wanted one from the first time I saw them some years back and though I will never hunt a jumbo with it, I wanted it to be a Big caliber. This is one rifle I'll hang onto for the long haul. Good luck on choosing a model and caliber, maybe you won't stop with one!

I have been looking at Encores in .204! .204 Ruger is an awesome caliber. I will have one, no doubt about it. I do like the versatility of the T/C, but I want a No. 1 as well. Who says I can't have both? :D

I think the Number 1 A1 is one of the most beautiful rifles made. I have one in .243 and this one in 7X57 wearing a Leopold VX II scope.

I read recently that Ruger has upgraded the barrels on the #1's and they actually are putting a decent trigger on the beast. Anyone else heard that?

If it is true, how would you know you are getting a newer one?

I have wanted one for years, but don't want the hassels that seem to track this gun.

I use a No1 RSI in .243 Killed many Fallow bucks with it. Shame about the trigger though. Have a Moyers trigger waiting to go in. Have had a Heym/Ruger No1 For over 25 years in .308 and killed from moose down to rabbits with it. Little bit of over kill on rabbits though.

No Picture,
Mine is a 22-250 with a 6x18 Burris.
Purchased it new in 93 I think. Love it, great accuracy. Won a 3 shot 100 yd group Bench Rest Comp at the local club shooting againist a bunch of boys with thier PPCs and 223s once. Doesn't shoot quite that well any more but still is 1/2" to 5/8" MOA. Use mine mostly for calling coyotes. Suprising once you get the hang of it how quick you can reload for another dog.
