I have a hankerin' for a single action revolver. I was thinking of the Ruger vaquero, but came across the Beretta Stampede at the gunshop that I frequent the other day. My question is has anyone had any doings with the Beretta, and is it as well made as other Beretta products? Good looking gun, and I like the feel of it. Thought I would talk to the people in the know here first. What do you suggest?

good shooting

Both are very good. I have a Vaquero in 44 Mag with a 5 1/2" barrel and believe it or not it is fun to shoot. You really know you have hold of something when it goes off. As far as the Beretta goes I was at their factory in Accokeek, MD back in 2004, and saw them in their Board Room. They are very well made. They closely follow the Colt size with several safety modifications. Now that Ruger dropped the 44 Mag Vaquero this is truly a case of which do you like best.

Rugers are built like a tank. And made in the USA also with cost of Dollar vs EURO the Ruger makes a better deal.

Nothing wrong with a Beretta; they make darn good shootin' irons.

However, in the SA revolver category I'm a Ruger guy. Read though Jim March's threads about after-market parts and customizing a Ruger.

I have both a Vaquero (old) and Stampede. In the past, I'd have suggested the Ruger, as it could handle magnum loads. Buit with the redesign of the Vaq, it's not the tank it was. THe action of the Beretta (actually a Uberti) is much smoother and the overall feel is better.

I am a RUGER fan myself

I am a RUGER fan for sure. I own the following:

P90, 10/22 - 3 of them, BlackHawk .357, BlackHawk .45 Colt 7.5 barrel, BlackHawk Bisley 45 Colt, Super RedHawk 44 Mag.

I shoot all of these several times per year. I clean and inspect them after every outing. None have ever needed any repair work. I am very much satisfied.

NICE Bird's Head conversion in brass. What caliber is that revolver?

Well, since Beretta now owns Uberti, that covers a lot of ground. As long as you don't want a particular caliber or barrel length that one or the other does or doesn't offer, it comes down to personal preference. Talking new guns here.
The Ruger is stronger, uses much superior all coil springs, and has the carry six safely transfer bar system, and the all state compliant internal hammer lock. It is not exactly like a Colt. It doesn't feel just like a Colt, but it feels pretty darned good in it's own right. From a practical and design point it is undoubtedly better. But this ain't about practical to begin with. :) This is Blondes, Brunettes, and Redheads in steel. Or Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot for the ladies.
Some Berettas will have a transfer bar too, but I would not go to a Beretta/Uberti unless I wanted a gen - u - ine Colt clone. For example, the Cimarron Model Ps are clones of the old Colt SAAs. Firing pin on the hammer, clicketty, click, click action, stops lined up with the loading gate, feels different in the hand, one piece grips - I fitted fake ivories. If you love Colts, and money, a clone is it.
I have two Ruger Vaqueros and two Cimarrons. If I could only have one, I would go with a Ruger, because I believe it will work at least from now until my grandchildren leave it to their grandchildren, and I just plain like them. Actually fits my hand better than a Colt, especially with a hot load. I got Wolff spring kits for all of them. The Cimarrons are a bit more accurate with mild 44 special lead loads, whereas with the hotter stuff the Vaqueros are more accurate. I know of no technical answer to this - I just got four guns that act that way.
I would say get whichever one gives you the best case of the warm fuzzies. You can love either one without much effort.
