A lot of LE agencies are arming themselves with the AR platform, which gave me a good idea for Ruger to make a competing law enforcement rifle.
I know a lot of LE agencies use the Mini 14 as a patrol carbine, but it could use a few improvements to compete with the AR series. Here is my idea for a better partrol carbine for less $$$$$$ than an AR.
Start with a Mini 14 in gray stainless and black synthetic. The barrel should remain the same length, but should be made heavier to improve accuracy and to handle the heat. A "match" fluted barrel would be nice.
I'd install something like Wilson XS sights but with dual flip down aperatures for close-in and then for longer ranges. Actually, I think there are some good AR type sights that could be utilized.
I would then mount a Weaver rail forward of the action over the barrel for mounting of a reflex sight that could be quickly removed. I saw an ad for one of these in Shotgun News a while back. They make similar mounts for the AK as well. It was basically a new guard over the top of the rifle with a built-in rail for mounting the optic in the scout position.
The Ruger Police Patrol Carbine must also take AR mags!!!!!!!!!!!
Ruger could mass produce these little carbines and undercut the AR makers. I'm sure a lot of agencies would bite if the rifles were accurate and reliable. They would also be "less scary" for the general public.
Any other great ideas?
