I stopped by a police supply store in the area and they had in the used gun/police trade-in case some Ruger Police Service Six revolers. Wondering what they are (GP-100's, Security Sixes, etc.)? They were stainless, 4" half lug barrels, fixed sights, hogue grips, and GP-100 style cylinder release buttons. Is this just a renamed GP-100? They were asking $250 for them.

I think I found what it is...I googled it and found a Ruger Police Security Six. Is this based on the GP-100 frame, or the Security Six frame?

Any idea if you could put the current GP-100 grips (the ones with the wood inserts) on them? I like those better than the Hogues.

As said before the Police Six, Service Six, and Security Six predate the GP-100. They were great guns in their day. In fact they aren't bad even today. I wish I had bought the Security Six I passed up years ago. As far as the grips, I don't believe they are interchangable. I think the GP-100 uses a different style of grip frame. The $250 seems to be a decent price for them.

I've had a Police Service Six for 33 years and it's still one of my favorite revolvers.

The GP100 is a completely different gun, grips do not interchange since the GP100 doesn't have a 'full' frame like the Security six has. It has a "stub" that the grips attach to.

Security Six (speed six is the same minus the adj. sights):

My Security Six

My Security Six was stolen out of my truck, along with the CD Player, a handful of quarters and a very valuable Matraca Berg CD.

I sure do miss that Ruger....not so much the CD though... :D

The first .357 I shot was a service six owned by lady who happened to be an ex FBI agent my mom worked with. I recall shooting IMSA chickens and pigs (steel targets) with it at 25 yards. (Don't know if it was her 'duty' gun or not.) That soulds like a really good price.

Mine has fixed sights but is marked "Police Service Six." I bought it in 1976. What does "police" mean in this context. Was it a police issue?

Ruger's Six line-up; Security, Service, and Speed Six, were some of the most rugged, well designed, and dependable revolvers ever built for the .357 Magnum and .38 Special. Not fancy and slick like a S&W Model 27 or Colt Python, these were working guns, purpose built for law enforcement, security work, and personal defense. Their modual design allowed you to detail strip a revolver like it was a semi-auto pistol. My favorite was the later 4" heavy barrel version of the Security Six. At $250 a piece, I would buy every one they had, provided they checked out okay. I would be happy with having back just one of the various Security Six and Service Six revolvers I've had over the years.

the Security-Six had a square butt and adjustable rear sights. available with 6", 4" and 2.75" barrels in .357mag

the Service-Six (sometimes Police) is the Security-Six, but with fixed sights. available with 4" and 2.75" barrels in .38spl, .357mag and 9mm

the Speed-Six was a Service-Six with a round-butt

I own a 4" stainless steel .357 Magnum Police Service-Six, circa 1983 if I remember correctly. It's my favorite revolver, in fact I like it so much that I got rid of my GP100.

i much prefer the Security-Six to the GP-100...and i'm on the hunt for one in the state at a reasonable price.

a tuned "6" is nicer than a S&W M-19...especially if you screw a Python barrel onto it

I can relate to what you said about the Security Six and the GP-100. After I had traded away my last Security Six, I started looking around for a new 4" .357. The GP-100 had just come out and I thought what could be better than an improved Security Six. And while it may have been redesigned and improved for the better, it just didn't feel the same way as my Security Six did. When I had to downsize a while back for financial reasons, the GP-100 was one of the first ones to go. I would love to see Ruger reintroduce the old Security Six and Speed Six revolvers, even if they were a limited run.

i know what you mean...i've been put off the GP-100 ever since. i wasn't heartbroken when the ex decided that was the pistol she wanted to keep when we split...but then she kept the S&W M-63 too

i read an article a while back where Bill Ruger said he wasn't sure if they ever made any money on the Security-Six family of pistols

What is the name of this store? I have been looking for a Police Service Six and would love to contact them?

Thanks....just put in a call and am waiting for a call back! Were you able to tell....were they in reasonable condition?

PVQ, the three they had in the case (and they said they have a lot more sitting in back) looked used, but not abused. I didn't see any marks on the outside of them. No rust as they were all stainless models. No dings, scratches, etc.
