I recently got a Police Service Six and really liked it. It so impressed me that I ended up ordering a 2 3/4" Security Six for daily carry. When I received it yesterday I compared the two. I think that I honestly prefer the Service Six. It is a little more rounded and looks and weighs more like a K frame Smith. The Security Six is quite a bit "blockier" and seems to weigh slightly more. Do not get me wrong, I really like that Security Six. But I think I prefer the Service Six. Do any of you guys feel the same way. I do realize that I am not likely to hurt either one in my lifetime by shooting them.

The snub Speed-Six is the compact version of the Service-Six. I agree that the Security-Six is a bit beefier in the top-strap area. I bought my almost NIB Service-Six for $185 on my 21st B-Day in 1997 and have not been disappointed. It's definitely far from NIB looking now. :D

The blockiness of the Security Six
and the GP100 top straps has always
been a point of aesthetic criticism. For
Ruger, I think, it's a case of the
rear adjustable sight's design dictating
the design of the top strap. Ditto
the Blackhawks.

I never have liked the short barrel Security Sixes. 4” is a good length for them though.

A Service or Speed Six in 2 3/4 barrel is a really beefy but not overly large handgun.

I preferred the Security Six with a 4" barrel and the Speed Six was fine with it's 2 3/4" barrel. The Service Six was also a favorite of mine; reminded me of a heavy barrel S&W Model 10.

I have owned a Security Six, had to sell it, traded my son's GP100 back to him for a Security Six he lucked upon. I believe the Security Six top strap is beefier to make up for the metal removed for the adjustable rear sight.

IMG_0862.JPG With a 2 3/4" barrel I favor the Speed Six which is a round butt. My second choice for 2 3/4" would be a Service Six. I like the Security Sixes in 4" or more but don't care for them in 2 3/4. Fixed sights and round but with compact grips is perfect IMO. Absolutely nothing wrong with 2 3/4" Security Six but I think the Speed and Service are better suited for carry.

If I remember correctly they had three variations in the 2 3/4. The one with sights always fetches more money when they go up for sale around here. They are pretty common around here. (Common as in see 5 or 10 for sale per year). The ones with the frame sight bring 500-700 and the ones with actual sights are usually 700-1000. I love the looks of all of them but the grip never fit my hand well. They grip very similar to the RedHawks as opposed to the GP100s and Super RedHawks.

Many years ago I helped a friend plant a lot of pine trees (somewhere in the neighborhood of 2000).

He paid me $200 and gave me a like new stainless, 4" Security Six .357 for my troubles.

I have shot hundreds of lbs of my .38 spl handloads (and a few magnums) through it over the last 20 or so years and it's never missed a beat.

I figure, running my hand loads I'll probably never wear this gun out!

I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

I believe you are correct. I was just looking at my 4" Security Six not 30 minutes ago. I had a 4" Service Six I sold long ago. I didn't really know what I had. But I know now and regret selling it.

I have both a 4 inch Service Six and a 4 inch Security Six. They handle about the same to me and use the same speed loaders and holsters. I prefer the Security because the previous owner had a trigger job done and it is the best revolver action on a RUGER product that I have come across, with the exception of the Match Champion revolvers. It just puts the run of the mill GP-100 to shame.
I also have a Speed Six with a very smooth action. It make a nice concealed carry gun due to the shorter length and round butt grip, but like some of the other's who have posted, I prefer a 4 inch barrel with .357 magnum ammo. I keep the Speed Six loaded with FEDERAL HST .38 Special +P 130 grain jhp. It is much more pleasant to shoot with the .38 ammo.
