I've got the security six and a an older smith 686, both with adjustable sights and 6" barrels. The ruger got an action job, the smith got a wolff spring kit. The smith has a WAY better trigger on it and the bigger grips and full underlug handle recoil more effectively.

The ruger feels much smaller, even with an aftermarket rubber grip. felt recoil is greater, especially with the skinny wood factory grips. it's not an issue with 38's, but with 357's it can become unpleasant. It cost me half what I paid for the smith.

If I could only keep one it would be the smith, but the ruger is a fine gun. shoots great, indestructible, and I like how petite it is. I wish I could trade my blued 6" for a stainless 4" though.

i like service/security sixes, theyve shot up, im a s/w model 10-6 .38 hb man myself but checkout summitgunbroker.com he has rugerdouble action and smith wesson n and k frame good prices.they dont last long.good luck.

The Six grips are small, but you can put any number of stock or grip variations on them. I use Tylers with mine and have no trouble with recoil even after several hundred magnums at a session.

I put some lighter springs (Wolff I believe) on the action and that plus use has really smoothed out the trigger. I prefer the Six trigger to S&W's.

A lot of owners will simply not part with their Sixes, and there's good reason for that. I've had and sold off a lot of K and J frames without feeling any great loss. The Ruger Six is different though. I miss the ones I sold and I'm never, ever parting with the Speed Six I carry. The only .357 wheelgun that's better is arguably the Colt Python.

Nice revolvers Confederate. You hit it right on the head. The Security/Service/Speed Six are without a question stronger than any medium size revolver in those years. Mine was made in 1985. Its still just as good as ever and has outlasted some of my Smiths 19/66s.
