I can tell several skunk stories. Last year I toted a .22 rifle all over the yard for a couple of months because of a skunk. The last thing I wanted to do was have to shoot it, but one day Mrs. Plinker and I were working on our pool deck, about 100 ft from the house, when a skunk showed up in the middle of the day at the back door! The dog was out and just about caught scent of him before I grabbed him. Otherwise it would have been a very bad day. We did not feel like being trapped by a possibly rabid animal away from the house, so every time we were out at the pool, the gun went too.
And years ago, when I was supervising a group of city boys at the local sports camp near us, they were terrified of bears. I told them bears were nothing, the skunk was the most dangerous animal in the woods. Well their eyes just about bugged out of their heads collectively.
"What does the skunk do?" one boy asked.
"Anything he wants", I replied. "Just leave him alone if you know what is good for you.
There are lots more, but I would not willingly shoot a skunk for any reason. There are a few where I would shoot one unwillingly, but I would not seek the confrontation, especially with a revolver. I don't want to be anywhere close when the stink bag goes off.
