My gun likes cheap remington thunderbolts more than anything. I would pick up some small 50 round boxes of different ammo and see what yours likes. I don't know about ammo for the .22 mag, but the thunderbolts seem to be pretty consistent from batch to batch, so I recomend you try them.

Skunks are best left alone. Someone ran over one near my house and the smell kept me awake all night.

Each gun comes out of the factory differently. I still haven't yet figured which diet mine prefers. Buy different bullets and a notebook, that's the only way I know you will make progress. FWIW.

I bought a Single Six about two weeks ago and have been shooting what I already have lots of - Federal Champion bulk pack from Cabela's. All my other .22s, which most are semis, seem to like that stuff for cycling, and the CZ rifle is very accurate with it. I have been doing fairly well with accuracy, although you won't see me out hunting for skunks any time soon! :what: Get used to how it handles, and try some different loads to see what works for you.

As a side note, it does not send nearly as much ammo down range as my other .22s, but I am finding it a lot of fun to shoot.

The single six is the first handgun I ever shot. It was my dad's ONLY handgun his whole life. I inherited his when he died 8 years ago. In fact, I shot a skunk with it back around 1980 ... the skunk was chewing up an outhouse by a cabin and I dispatched it as it was leaving the outhouse one day.

I wear mine with a very nice Mernickle rig ... and it seems to shoot accurately ... it's an older model probably made in the mid 1950's. Great handgun, fun to shoot, great for getting kids started.

Most .22 LR & Mag pistols (and rifles) will favor a particular brand & load of ammo, but that "favorite load" will vary between guns. For instance, my Volquartsen rifle LOVES the Wolf Match Target Extra but my Buckmark Match Contour 5.5 pistol hates the stuff.

Your best bet is to buy one box of several varieties & shoot ALL of 'em. Your pistol will tell you which it likes the best. Good Luck!

I shoot Winchester Dynapoints in mine, but that's for range work. I don't hunt with them.

Not a great pic, but here's mine.

To be fair to the gun, I haven't shot it all that much but it seems to be the most accurate with the magnum rds, especially the Dynapoints. Only problem is, in my area .22 magnum rds cost as much as the cheap 9MMs so I usually shoot the Federal Bulk Pack .22LRs. (I leave skunks alone)

When I get a new .22, th efirst thing I do is go to the store and get a box of every brand of .22 ammo they have and go to the range. Shoot about 20 rounds of each at its own target, take the target and mark it as to brand and put it away. The next day, pull out all the targets and decide which one has the tightest group.

I personally can't tell at the range the difference between two groups that are close in size but the next day it seems very clear.

Nice looking gun, I need to get a stainless model one of these days.

Skunks are best left alone.

This is far from the truth. They are amazingly proficient at killing chickens, just general barnyard tearing stuff up, and will even attack humans (including small children) when they feel threatened.

Curious... are different species of skunk more aggressive?

The kind we have around here won't even spray people unless you back them into a corner and give them no retreat option. I've never even heard of skunks attacking people (with their teeth) around here. Unless they have rabies or are sick.

I've even met a "defumed" pet skunk once, and it seemed very docile.

If I see them in the wild, I just let them be. Never even had a wild one charge me when I accidently surprised one.

An older Single Six....

I can tell several skunk stories. Last year I toted a .22 rifle all over the yard for a couple of months because of a skunk. The last thing I wanted to do was have to shoot it, but one day Mrs. Plinker and I were working on our pool deck, about 100 ft from the house, when a skunk showed up in the middle of the day at the back door! The dog was out and just about caught scent of him before I grabbed him. Otherwise it would have been a very bad day. We did not feel like being trapped by a possibly rabid animal away from the house, so every time we were out at the pool, the gun went too.

And years ago, when I was supervising a group of city boys at the local sports camp near us, they were terrified of bears. I told them bears were nothing, the skunk was the most dangerous animal in the woods. Well their eyes just about bugged out of their heads collectively.

"What does the skunk do?" one boy asked.

"Anything he wants", I replied. "Just leave him alone if you know what is good for you.

There are lots more, but I would not willingly shoot a skunk for any reason. There are a few where I would shoot one unwillingly, but I would not seek the confrontation, especially with a revolver. I don't want to be anywhere close when the stink bag goes off. :barf:

There has been a skunk epidemic here this year. They are digging holes in everyone’s lawn looking for grubs. Our cat will even give them a wide circle so they don’t meet. They will go away and follow other food sources.

thenks for the help I have a skunk story I hade a skunk in a trap so I got my gun loaded it with 3 CB shorts
Took a tarp covered the skunk took it fare a away from my house lifted the tarp a little shot it 3 times in the head it did not hurt it at all! (I got the payload in the face so I think were even)
I had to fill up my garbage can with water and put him in it stunk for days but I have killed so many of them skunk smell does not bother me

We've had a skunkfest around these parts as well. A trapper friend of mine collected over 60 of 'em for the city (Animal Control was clueless) in 2006. And the tiny city only has 2500 people!

He says the best way to kill 'em once you catch one in a live trap is to approach with a blanket held high in front of you (so the skunk can't see you) and drape the blanket over the trap. Then drop the whole package in a pond or lake. They won't spray that way. And all you SPCA types, just give me your address along with your slanderous comments. We'll FedEx the live ones right to your house!

I have done away with some like that but did not like holding them under the water a bullet to the head is much faster I have killed so many that the smell dose not bother me I have a friend who skins them his a little nuts

If you are looking for .22 mag ammo i bought 2000 rounds of Armscor ammo from Sportsman's Warehouse for about $5.50 a box with shipping. My freind in N. Carolina said he saw a full page add for Armscor ammo in Shotgun news (i think) that had the .22 mag for about that same price.

I used to buy this from Cheaper Than Dirt and found it to be fine ammo. Also .22 Winchester Rim Fire, which is a shorter case with a 45 grain bullet makes a good sub load for a revolver. It will not feed in my Marlin tube fed bolt or my Winchester lever gun. But you can single load it. I have a Savage .22 mag/20 gauge model 24 on its way and plan on trying the .22 WRF in it.

Natchez has .22 WRF for about $5.50 a box in their latast flyer.

I just love a good skunk hunt,,,they skin out bout' like a squirrel, but do give off a bit of an oder when fryin', not nearly as greasy as a darned ol' possum and more tender than a ground hog, lot nicer pelt too.
