Hi
I have a new Ruger SP101 revolver in 357 cal. it has a 2.5 inch barrel
and I have some Speer Gold Dot 357 mag 170 grain DCSP ammo. My question is, can I shoot this 170 grain out of my SP101. I wasn't sure because I have not been able to fine any information one way or the other.

Should be just fine. Recoil may be brisk.
Fire a round and check for sticky extraction and Primer "flow".
Shouldn't be a problem for your ruger, might be a bit hot for the uber light j-frames though.

As long as it's not one of the early .357 SP101 that are limited to 125 grain bullets (if it is, it will be clearly marked on the barrel) it will be fine.

Barrel twist rate? For Ruger .357 mag I'll guess around 1:18 Colt did 1:14, with snub nose length barrels and heavy/long bullets the faster twist helps.

Does anyone here have the version limited to the 125gr? What limits the gun to the lighter bullets? The length of the cylinder?

The first SP101s were 38 Special only guns. When Ruger was convinced that the design was strong enough to handle 357 Magnum they simply chambered the 38 Special length frames and cylinders to 357 Magnum and they were not long enough to chamber rounds loaded with bullets heavier than 125gr. They eventually lengthened the frame and cylinder so that 357 Magnum SP101s could chamber and shoot any 357 Magnum load. SP101s with the lengthened frames have an 'X' in the model number, e.g. KSP-321X. Ruger has not manufactured any SP101s in 357 Magnum on the 38 Special frame in over 20 years.

You can shoot any SAAMI spec 357 Magnum ammunition in your SP101.
FWIWH, Ruger® offers the SP101 in 2¼", 3.06", and 4.2" barrel lengths. I've never seen a 2½" SP101.

That is a great revolver; strong, accurate and reliable. A good friend of mine survived a serious beating by using one; after he got it back from the agency doing the investigation, it goes everywhere with him. I like the same gun for pocket carry or in the spring-loaded consoles of our vehicles. We keep it loaded with 158 JSP's. Recoil is sharp, blast is ferocious, but I believe it is a good tool for most situations.
