Just picked up a Ruger SP101 3 1/2" .357. Sorry for not posting picture, but my camera is having some problems and I figure most of us have seen an SP101, but did post a link.

Love the pistol, but hate the grips. They are functional, but butt ugly. :barf:

Any suggestions on some good replacement grips, maybe with pics? This will be my primary carry piece.

Ignore the one with the scope.

I have a SP101 2 1/4" DAO, are the stock grips too small, too big? None of the above?
Since you mentioned it would be a primary carry pistol, do you want to stay with grips that will not print, or print too badly when carried, is it a non-issue?
Or is it a cosmetic issue, an ergonomic one, or both?

Cougfan2,

They are Hogue grips. Depending on the wood, can run around $40-$70. I got that set off ebay. Here's Hogue's website.

They also have an auction area on their website, where they sell "seconds" I've never bought anything from the "seconds" area. But they say whatever the problem is that makes them "seconds" are very minor & probably not noticeable. At this moment, there are none in the auction section for the SP101.

hogues all the way

I put a soft rubber hogue mono on one and it felt way better. It was prettier too. those stock sp101 grips are fUgly.

I have a couple sp101s. Both wear Houge mono-grips. They fill your hand out well, the angle is correct, and you get the third finger on the grip for better recoil control.

One of them is on it's third set of the rubber ones, I've literally worn 2 sets out.

JimJD The stock grips are just too small for my hands. Not so concerned with printing, but would like to be as discreet as possible. I'll check out the Hogue grips as others have suggested. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

I have a set of Trausch Grips on my 3-incher, and love them. http://www.trausch.com/form/accueilA.htm They are much more of a full-sized grip, but make shooting full-house .357 loads much more bearable than the stock grips. If you are looking to make the stock grips a bit more interesting, several folks sell inserts, such as fancy wood, stag, etc. in place of the stock plastic ones. I have a set of Sack Peterson elk stag for another sp of mine. http://www.sackpeterson.com/models.html

Oh, ok. :D
The Hogue grips are great. Besides wood, they have a nice rubber one, nylon too if you so desire. But, "rubber" and similar compounds can catch on your clothing a little; unlike smooth wood. The reason I asked about printing while carrying is an option from Pachmayr.

The grip in question is the "Compac" model.

If your only complaint is the looks they can be made to look much better with a set of wood inserts to replace the plastic ones.

I personally find the stock grips are very good for concealed carry. I have tried the hogue and while they are great at the range they do print more.

a little off topic

but i have adhd.

The hogues felt better at the range. I did notice that the little sp shot more accurately with .357 than with .38spl. recoil was a bit brutal as well. A smooth wood grip might tame the recoil a bit, sort of the way wood grips feel better on a blackhawk, but I never tried.

Thanks all. I have my eye on some Hogue Goncalo Alves smooth grips with finger grooves. Thanks again for all the input.

I really like the Badgers

they came on the SP101 I just bought a couple of weeks ago. They eat up recoil pretty well with everything I've shot through it so far.

The Badgers look great. I think they're better proportioned to the size of the SP101 than the Hogues. IMHO

tuckerdog1 I just found the Badger web site late last night. Some very cool grips! Why, oh why, must there be so many options? :)

I highly recommend Badger grips. I have a set of combat grips on my M640 .357 Magnum and a set of boot grips on my M642. Both are comfortable to shoot and they even help soak up the felt recoil when shooting 145gr Winchester Silvertip .357 Magnum ammo in my M640. Both are done in Rosewood. (just because I like the color lol)

I put the Hogue Monogrips on mine and it improved my grip and repeatability due to the extra finger groove. However, for me the factory ruger grips distribute the recoil of truly heavy loads MUCH better. They use a softer rubber and put the recoil back into my palm rather than up into the web of my hand.

For me, the best would be a hybrid between the factory and the monogrip. Finger grooves like the monogrip, but the rear width and softness of the facory grip.

Just installed a set of the Hogue rubber monogrips. Man what a difference! It feels like a different gun! Can't wait to get it to the range. Will still probably buy some "BBQ" grips. I like the looks of the Badgers more and more.
