My main carry gun is a short barrel SP101 that I've had for 5 years. I can't imagine shooting anything lighter with full house .357 loads. I had mine ported to help control recoil. It hardly moves with .38 speials. With much firing, dry and actual, the trigger has really smoothed out, It's not quite up to my old Smiths, but I doubt that anything made today is. I got the DAO bobbed hammer one because I carry it, and am well satisfied.

If I was going to carry OWB on a good gun belt with either a Yaqui or a belt slide, would the 3-1/16" model be difficult to conceal? Wondering if the shorter barreled model is the way to go for OWB with the tucked-out shirt.

Impossible to say for sure without knowing how low you wear your belt and how long your shirttails are, but if you carry OWB, yes, there is a greater chance that a 3" barrel will result in decloaking the gun. I think you are probably talking 2" here.

Longer barrel for sure.
It may not increase velocity much but it will increase energy by a whole lot - remember, energy is proportionate to the square of velocity. The last fifty fps carry many times more energy than the first fifty fps.

Also, the muzzle blast and flash are lower. For a night-stand gun not blinding oneself with the first shot may be very important.

Got mine today :D

2.25" barrel. Now I need a good IWB holster and atleast one speedloader...

Edit: Also I need to research what the best .38 defensive load is. So much research!

What I'd like to see Ruger offer is a 3" SP101 with sights adjustable for windage and elevation. It's not like it'd be hard to do -- just a click or two on a the computer program that's running the milling machines.

Well, I think it might be a little more complicated than "a click or two" - but I get your meaning! :neener:

Anyway, I believe I saw a package by one of the big name pistolsmiths that includes an adjustable sight for the SP101. It might have been Ron Power, but I'm not sure.. I'd check now, but the corporate Net Nanny says Powers Custom is a nasty weapons site & I'm not allowed to go there. Big Brother is watching...:scrutiny:

I prefer the shorter barrel for carry. For a nightstand gun I use a 4" GP100.
