Ruger Speed Six

I have a 3" (not 2 3/4 ") Stainless Ruger Speed Six in .38 Special. I was wondering if a .357 Mag. cylinder could be swapped for the .38 cylinder? Is a Ruger Speed Six, Service Six, Security Six .357 cylinder any longer than their .38 cylinder? Thanks.

I think there was a thread or two talking about this very topic. I think the .38 and .357 wheels are the same size. I also think you could have the .38spl bored out a little and chamber .357mags in it. Some have said that the .38 Speed six is not strong enough to handle the .357 mag but that is BS. It is the same gun. If you bored out the cylinder, it should be the same gun as the .357mag. Same with swapping parts.

I think you should be fine whatever route you take but better get a second opinion because I am not sure and I have not done it.

It has been a long time since I have handled a Ruger Speed Six but I do remember the frame is identical for .38 and .357.
A .357 cylinder could be fitted to a .38 frame but you would also have to clearance face the barrel to allow room for the longer .357 cylinder in the frame.
You would also have to cut a new forcing cone.
Timing Index and lockup should be the same between the two calibers as will be the bore dimensions.

Not 100% sure but I believe the Ruger Security/Speed Six's in .38Special were limited run/special order items for LE depts. that wanted Rugers but weren't allowed .357Mag revolvers.I suggest you check this out before you bore out/swap cylinders.You can always use .38Sp +P or +P+ loads & have a
shooting collectable. Just a thought.
