I bought a gently used Ruger SP101 yesterday, and it stinks! This thing smells like the grease I used to lubricate my Dad's semi trucks when I was younger. I tried to cover the aweful odor up with some Breakfree CLP, then Remoil, then Hopps #9, and nothing works. I swear if this gun was a cartoon it would have little "stink lines" coming off of it. This revolver reeks, what can I do?

Pull the grips off and spray it down with brake cleaner.

Then put it HOT water with liquid dish soap (wash the grips in it also). Rinse, hand dry it and shake out excess water. Use a hair dryer to blow out the rest of the water.

Lube and put it back together.

I'd be pretty sure it ain't a ''Ruger original stink''!!!

Something in its past must have been introduced into it - whether as lube tho or just ''anti personnel'' is hard to know!

Might it have been hidden in a kitty litter box? :p

Used in a skunk shooting? :uhoh:

Detail strip and bath in concentrated laundry soap - after a good soak, rinse multiple times, until no suds remain. Place in warm place to dry thoroughly and re lube and re-assemble.

Hmmm ... SP-101 - ''Stench Pistol - 101'' ;)

Must be the infamous original formula Tetra Gun Oil. I was trying to get rid of the bottle I bought and used it on the hinges on the back gate. The trash men stopped coming by. :)

One of my lawyer buddy's kids said it smelled like the dog got sick.

I think JohnBT nailed it! I (unfortunately) used some of the
old Tetra and to put it mildly the oder is repulsive! Soak
or wipe down all the parts with Hoppes 9 or some other solvent
and get rid of the rag and then relube.

Somebody must have carried it in a well concealed but uncomfortable body location. Seriously, the spray down with gun scrubber is best, except for a complete disassembly.

This may just be a new ruger innovation for self defense. If 5 shots of .357 mag isnt enough perhaps a repulsing odor will fend off the beast.

Personally I boil them in dishwasher soap.

Personally I boil them in dishwasher soap. The boiling means the water evaporates quickly and the dishwasher soap rinses clean - streak free.

I don't have a problem running things through the dishwasher, from computer keyboards to blackpowder guns but the cycle through doesn't always dry quickly for me.

Simple - bad odors ALWAYS come from the butt. A gun does NOT have armpits or a crotch, so it has to be coming from the butt. With me, it's belly-button greasy lint. Man, I cannot pick my nose for a week if I unconsciously poke/scratch my belly-button. I think Gilda Radner on SNL did a whole skit on this once with Belushi.

I was stopped and questioned once for brandishing just because someone noticed toilet paper hanging off the butt of my CCW gun...

Maybe someone was using it as a deep cover gun and keister'ed it....

Has it been de-horned?
