I'd like to know what your favorite lubricant is for a semi-auto rifle. I'm thinking specifically about the AR-15, but would also like to hear of experience with other rifles, such as the mini-14, M1-A, AK, etc...
I've used Hoppes to clean, and Breakfree LP to lube with. I use the LP not the CLP, as it seems thicker. It's harder for me to find though.
Thanks for your suggestions.

I use a concoction of different lubes, but, if I had to pick just one, it would be Mobil-1 15w-50 synthetic.

I occasionally use CLP to clean, but it will never be used as a lube on any of my firearms.

Have been very satisfied with Tetra Gun Solvent, Oil and Grease...incredible stuff!

Am now testing Militec-1 weapons-grade synthetic based metal conditioner, which the Military has praised as best in Iraq's very fine sand conditions...where BreakFree gave problems...

The M1 and M1A are best lubed with grease not oil. Grease stays put, oil migrates onto your shooting glasses.

Mobil 1 synthetic oil (for cars).

Works great, cheap. Been using it in everything for years, never a problem.

FP-10 is all I've ever needed.

Grease collects too much grime/dirt and can stall some weapoms in the cold.

I feel like I've tried them all, but always revert back the ol' standby - Gunslick grease. Never did like oils much, and Gunslick's all weather.

Grease doesn't collect any more dirt/particles than oil. It's a matter of how much of either used, not what type. If oil isn't collecting particles, there's no oil there. Oil-based products, by their very nature, all collect particles.

I second that notion. I have been using it on all of my firearms with no problems.

and cheap high-pressure moly grease on the hammer, sear, and trigger engagement points.

That's the ticket. You can get a lifetime supply for a few dollars. For oil, I like Mobil 1. It seems to keep the fouling in suspension better than anything else.

For the AR, I clean it with Shooter's Choice Bore Cleaner and CLP. Lube with FP-10. Never had any issue with this regimen.

I use Military LSA - "Lubricant Small Arms" on my guns. Works the best I've ever seen.

Of course, in Texas, it doesn't get very cold, which is good as extreme cold can cause LSA to gum up, which is why the miltary also had LAW - "Lubricant Arctic Weather". Can't find that stuff anywhere.

So where do you guys put the lub on the gun? On the contacting surfaces of the moving parts of the action and the receiver? or generally all surfaces of the action and receiver? Why is the lube supposed better than the oil?

grease has a buffering effect while oil does not. Good way to wreck a M-1 is lube the bolt with breakfree or another oil type.

Another Mobil Syn 15W50 here (for the past couple of years). Stays in place longer than Hoppe's, Outers, and RemOil that I've used in the past.

This varies with the gun. For my AR-15, I put a liberal coat of Slide-Glide grease on the outside of the bolt, the ejector and extractor moving surfaces, the bolt carrier rails (top and bottom,) and on the charging handle track. The buffer and buffer spring get wiped down with a very thin coat of grease. The trigger nose, hammer hooks, and disconnector engagement points all get a thin coating of Moly grease, which holds up better under pressure (pressure between a sear and hammer can run into the hundreds of pounds per square inch.)

Grease stays where you put it. Grease does not dry up or boil off when the weapon gets hot.

Slide Glide's really good stuff.

Or head on over to a marine supply store and pick up a tub of the red drive grease. Really good stuff. ;)
