I tried this in the handloading forum, but wanted to try here also

Odd thing happened yesterday, took the Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter 7.5in barrel, 44mag & Ruger GP100 357 6in barrel to the range to sight-in today. I was sighting in my GP100 today with new Williams Sights, it all went well with the 357. Then i moved onto the 44mag SBHH to check some loads i had put togehter.

1. Oregon Trail 240gr SWC w/10gr Universal, Starline brass, Win LP primer
2. Hornady 240 XTPHP w/23.9gr H110, Starline brass, Win LP primer
3. Hornady 240 XTPHP w/11.6gr Longshot, Starline brass, Win LP primer

With thr SBHH sights set as they came from the factory, i shot the OT 240 SWC & Hrndy 240XTPHP w.23.9gr H100 at 20 yds. And the POI was about 7 to 8 in below POA. I thought this odd since I had not changed the sights since I purchased the gun. I was shooting from a MTM rest with the barrel resting in the rubber portion of the rest, and the grip resting on the lower part of the rest. I adjusted the rear sight of the SBHH to try and raise the POI, but never quit got there. Ended up about 2 in low and 2 in right of the bull.

I was about to give up, because the rear sight seemed to be close to its limits of elevation. Then I tried the Hornady 240 XTPHP w/11.6gr longshot and had a POI which was almost right on the bull, where i wanted it.

Then i went back to the two other loads, Hornady 240XTPHP w/23.9 H110 and OTSWC w/ 10gr Universal and the POI was back down to 4 in or so below the bull and to the left slightly.

It seemed that no matter how much I turned the elevation up the POI would not rise any more, and seemed to be cloe to its upper most limit.

As my hand was getting tired from the pounding, I decided to give up for the day and try again another day.

I came to the conclusion that it may be me jerking the trigger or something. But Im not sure. I just wanted to put an inquiry out to all to see what you folks had to say about the situation.

Im new to the SBHH 44mag, so Any comments and opinions will be appreciated.:banghead:

Try just having the barrel on the and hold the grip totally in your hand. It might be that the grip is hitting the rest just right that the gun does not rise in natural recoil to allow it to hit higher on the target.
IIRC the front sight is easily removable, try a shorter front sight.

rwdwrt,

Part of your problem might be the resting of the barrel on the rubber part! Next time you're out, try resting the front of the frame, right under the where the cylinder forcing cone and barrel are, on the rubber part. Bet you'll find this works better!

Targets where 11x17 with about 12 in target (green) with a 3in bull (white) in the middle

Okay, curious. I've helped a couple people who actually shot low on small targets a longer distances because they held low, thinking they needed to see more of the target.
