Just picked up a used ruger super redhawk 454 casull for 500 with an Adco red dot scope. I wasn't really looking for a scope but it came with one so why not. We shot it the same afternoon and WOW. Those 454 rounds are really something. We also had a 4" 44 mag smith which was like a pop gun after the casull. The scope worked well, we could hit clay pigeons on a bank at 50 yards in the off hand, which is good for me with a hand gun. The big ruger kicks but not like I thought it would. It was quite manageable. The shock wave that comes out of that thing is something else though. I'm looking forward to hunting with it. Can anyone tell me about the Adco scopes? This one seems kind of cheap. It has 0-11 on the dial for the red dot but shuts off on the 11 instead of the zero. Also, the knob that has the dial seemed loose so I took off the batt. cap and tightened a screw down lock ring and that seemed to help. The recoil could be eating up the scope. Any info. would be appreciated.

Yeah, the recoil could be beating up the scope, it happens. The blast and the recoil are probably the reason you were able to buy this whole package for $500. Lots of people go out and buy revovlers in 454 and rifles in 300 Win Mag or 458 Magnum only to find the blast and recoil is more than they can tolerate.

My biggest caliber handgun is 44 Magnum, my biggest rifle caliber is 30-06, my biggest shotgun is 12 gauge.

1. Do I need anything bigger? No.

2. Can I handle anything bigger? Maybe, but refer back to question number one.

That .454 SRH is a well engineered revolver. It's ergonomics provide a better recoil event, even with substantial .454's, than a wood gripped 29 or 629 with healthy .44M's. That was what turned me against the .44M for over a quarter of a century... three 'hot' rounds split my hand's web... no thank you! My first DA revolver was my .454 SRH, bought mainly to shoot .45 Colts. I have shot hundreds of .454's - and, they are loud with a substantial muzzle/bc blast - and you know you've shot something. My first .44 came a bit later - and it was a 629 Mountain Gun. Even with moderate .44M's, it is still more punishing than that .454 SRH.

I am not currently a hunter. I am a plinker. I have loads of fun plinking away with my MKII or CZ-452 and a box or two of cheapie .22 LR's... but some times, I just feel like banging away with a big bore... usually, .44 Special or .45 Colt. It is a hobby. Everyone approaches it differently. BTW, I like the S&W 500 - and I hope it does well for S&W, although I won't be getting one. I am more interested in the new version of the 21 fixed sight .44 Special they are supposed to release later this year. To each their own...

PS My favorite example of overkill is the nice fellow I see at the range occasionally - with his Ruger #1 in .458 Lott and CZ-550 Safari in .458 Win - with which he hunts white tail deer.

my 454 SRH wears an aperture sight from One Ragged Hole www.oneraggedhole.com and I have a fiber optic front sight

works well for me

I like the Tasco ProPoint, but I don't know how long it would last on the .454. I had one on my 44Mag SRH and liked it, before it went on my crossbow.

BTW, the Hogue Monogrips are where it's at for the SRH, especially in .454.

I don't think a cheap scope is going to last long on a .454, so I went and got a Burris Posi-Lock scope with a lifetime warranty. Good scopes!

People do buy these and cannot handle them and so some good buys can be had. My SRH was ported and had a trigger job and had to be shipped to me - $525. :)

The scope rings you've got are a Ruger factory set, they come with the gun and they have a good rep.

If I recall right, 1" rings are standard. If you need to, they'll swap with you for 30mm rings for free. I *might* have this backwards though :). Point is, you can swap to whatever you don't have.
